The café not only provides meals but is also a meeting point for those who are having a hard time or need support for a variety of reasons. This café also facilitates an accredited work experience program that provides on-the-job training for youth at risk or the long-term unemployed. Staff assisting with catering duties (varies from day to day) are those who are employed by the centre, volunteers, people who are on the ‘work for the dole program’ and also people who have community service hours and have opted to complete their hours at the centre. The preparation of the meal commences at 0930 and finishes at 11:45 for lunch to be served at 12:00. Food is donated from hospitality schools and a system called the ‘Food Bank’ – boxed or canned foods and other produce donated by major companies/stores such as Coles and Woolworth’s. If there are nil food donations the centre has an account with a large wholesaler for food products. Staff fax through an order and the food is delivered, so the homeless will not go without. Streetlevel Foodmarket – The Streetlevel Food Market which opened on the 21st October 2005, resembles a mini mart where those who are disadvantaged can purchase goods via a barter system including the use of food vouchers offered by the…show more content…
In addition to this, the centre has introduced cooking classes (recipe cards are offered) which people can attend to understand the benefits and the importance of nutritional meals as well how to maintain a healthy diet with the food at hand. The local community has much to benefit from the Streetlevel centre, as the assistance provided to those who are disadvantaged has given them a sense of hope, that someone does care and will guide them on a balanced and healthy pathway to life. The Salvation Army uses many different tools to raise funds and promote awareness. These include: • Salvos Stores and Op Shops sell donated goods to raise funds. • Direct mail sent to people's homes. • Circulars dropped in mailboxes. • Advertisements in newspapers and magazines (free public service announcements). • Internet website/ Email messages to
