In this report I will write about understanding the skills required for working in the public services and the purpose and importance of these skills. I will look at two contrasting services, Police and Army. Police service has many different teams and specialists. Some of them are Special Constables where people doing completely different jobs, becomes a police officers after their normal work hours, Dog Squad where dogs are used to help the police, CO19 which is an armed response unit, or Air Support Unit where police uses helicopters to the most challenged calls. Each of these teams works in different shifts and hours, for example Air Support Unit, is staffed by 18 police constables, three police sergeants, police staff including pilots, operations room staff, engineers and an intelligence officer who need to be ready 24/7 if there is a call and air support is needed. Also, there are different skills required to join any of these teams in Police Service. Some of the most important skills are communication, where all members of staff need to be able to communicate clearly with others so that all tasks can be done safely and correctly. As an example I can use Dog Squad, were the dog is also a member of the team, and police officer needs to be able to communicate with this dog clearly so that it can make it’s purpose of helping the police and also to be used effectively. Another very important skills are professional and personal skills which are known as punctuation, pride of appearance and behaviour. These skills are very important because as we know, police officer should be a good example for other people so that he should wear the uniform correctly, be always punctual and also behave appropriately.
