Officer Selection Process CJA/214 The Selection process for local, state and federal agency officer are very similar. The departments seek to hire the best men or women for the job to maintain the integrity and best qualified individuals to enforce the law. Recruiters look for these individuals for them to possess the required traits, the candidates need to have good judgment and also require good critical thinking skills. Physical agility is also required due that police officers sometimes get in certain situations that require them to be in good physical shape and have the ability to perform certain stressful duties. There are also the minimum requirements that you need to possess to be a police officer; first of all you need to be 21 years old but there is some departments that only require you to be 18 years old. Many departments don’t have an education requirement but most officers need to have is a minimum a high school diploma. Having a valid driver’s license for the state that you are applying is required. The other requirement is to have no prior felony convictions. Technology has turned into a really important tool in the daily routine for policy officers. This is the reason that police candidates have to be literate in technological advances such as mapping and Comp Stat. This is a technology that maps out the city and shows the areas where most crimes occur. Technology aids police officers in identifying criminals and lookup their criminal records. Legal knowledge is very important for police officers to have an understanding in law like rules of evidence and the fourth amendment that protects individuals from illegal search and seizures. All these subjects are taught in the police academy but it is really important for police candidates to have basic knowledge of laws before they start the academy.
