Promote Communication in Health, Social Care or Children’s and Young People's Settings – Unit 1/HSC 031 1.1 Different reasons people communicate People use communication for differing reasons but ultimately communication relates to the sharing of information. Through communication people convey their thoughts/ideas, feelings/emotions e.t.c. Communication is essential within the health and social care setting. Staff need to communicate with clients in order to best assess their needs, then plan for and support around them. Staff need to communicate with one another in order that each is aware of the needs of the client group and contributes to providing continuity of care. 1.2 How communication affects working relationships at work Communication in the workplace is essential to effective working both with colleagues and the client group. The use of good communication skills promotes better relationships with colleagues, clients and family members. Without good communication skills the staff member may have difficulty establishing a therapeutic relationship. This may lead to miscommunication and the client’s needs going unnoticed/unmet. This in turn may lead to inadequate care or in extreme cases harm. 2.2 Factors to consider when promoting effective communication • Client’s ability to comprehend – language, sensory impairment, emotional state, learning disability and mental health. • Would the client benefit from the support of an interpreter language/signing. • Would the client benefit from the support of a family member or friend (giving consideration to confidentiality). • Staff's own communication style. Consider adapting as necessary – volume, rate, tone, use of gestures and potential to communicate in writing. • Is the environment conducive to positive communication – private, quiet, well lit e.t.c. •
