Unit 4222-301 – Promote communication in health and social care Outcome 1 – Be able to understand why effective communication is important in the work setting. 1.1 - Communication is essential within the working environment for a number a key reasons. People would communicate to: ▪ Ensure a safe working environment. ▪ To pass information on to the next shift regarding issues that have arisen during a shift. ▪ To highlight any vulnerable patients. ▪ To highlight any potential violent patients. ▪ To refer a patient onto a suitable speciality. ▪ To inform colleagues of any issues regarding stock or equipment. ▪ To advise colleagues of any changes in procedure or protocol. ▪ To update patients and relatives with information regarding their care and any potential delays in treatment. ▪ To avoid confusion due to lack of information. ▪ To record accurate medical notes. ▪ To inform each other of completed or outstanding tasks ▪ To be polite! 1.2 - Communicating in the workplace helps to develop good amicable working relationships. By communicating in a polite and professional manner, all members of the team can strive to achieve the desired outcome without confusion and unnecessary delays. The relationship between staff and patient/relatives is enhanced through good communication as everyone is ‘kept in the loop’ thus reducing frustration. Poor communication between colleagues can lead to a tense and frustrated atmosphere which will usually then affect the quality of the work being done. This will then lead to frustration from patients and relatives as they feel that their needs are not met.
