This can be seen through the laws that followed after the St. Valentine’s Day massacre, John F. Kennedy assassination and the killing of Martin Luther King Junior which were meant for the government to control the type of guns that citizens could carry and use. I would highly recommend that leaders and citizens to take part in the gun control measures and laws in order to improve their safety and that of their family from crime. I decided as I said in the beginning to pick this topic because a majority of individuals have been affected by gun violence and it has become a menace to society. I will end with “Guns do not kill people. People kill people” at the end of the day gun lobbyists, owners a like and the general public should advocate for laws that encourage buyers and owners to demonstrate that they can possess a firearm lawfully and responsibly.

Church and General George Wingate. The NRA, one of today’s largest gun rights lobbying organizations in the United States, serves to “promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis” (Gettings). With the rise of mobster and gangster activities as well as the illicit usage of firearms, President Franklin D. Roosevelt instilled the National Firearms Act in 1934 in hopes to rid the country of automatic-firing weapons. The National Firearms Act imposed a $200 tax ($2,525 today) on each firearm, and all buyers were required to fill out paperwork subject to the Treasury Department for approval (Gettings). With the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and Robert Kennedy, the Gun Control Act of 1968 quickly passed with major restrictions and revisions to the National Firearms Act.
Obama’s Administration and NRA on Gun Control Debate in America Guni K. Bal PR 336 by Jack Saunders Golden Gate University - Spring 2013 White House Chief of staff Denis McDonough said in an appearance on CNN that, “Obama is not giving up on assault weapons ban being added to an amendment. We are going to work on this. We are going to find the votes. It deserves a vote.”1 It’s easy to get a gun in this country. Hence America has the highest rate in gun violence in the world.2 One big enabler is the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution: Obama’s administration says that guns are weapons of crimes and the NRA says that guns are for safety and protection.
There are people who are mentally ill that are able to purchase guns with the intent of killing people. Laws for purchasing guns should be strengthened. A simple background check should not be the only thing in the way of a person purchasing weapons. The National Rifle Association was founded in 1871 as a sporting and hunting association, they supported most gun control regulation for its first 100 years. Now the National Rifle Association members are in favor requiring an extensive background check, and “69 percent support requiring all gun sellers at gun shows to conduct criminal background checks of the people buying guns; 59 percent favor mandatory registration of handguns; and 77 percent favor a waiting period for the purchase of a handgun.” All of these are would make it harder for people to purchase guns and allow proper documentation for every gun.
The NRA believe in the Bill of Rights’ second amendment over anything, which gives every citizen the right to own a gun. The NRA also claims that if criminals have guns to commit crimes – why shouldn’t citizens be able to own a gun, legally, to protect themselves? They even made a commercial to demonstrate their views, calling President Obama a hypocrite. The allegation is caused by Obamas look upon armed guards at public schools. The NRA feels that if Obama can protect his children with armed guards at the White House, all children in the United States should have that same
The people that will be studied upon will include a broad range of 18 and older people who are students at Western Oregon University. For my methodology I will conduct a survey to identify weather people feel like gun control law infringes on their second amendment rights. Gun Control Literature Review The debate over gun control has been raging through the American political systems for years. On one side, there are the National Rifle Association (NRA) and 2nd Amendment-citing citizens who use their firearms for hunting and
Our current gun control laws are ineffectual with ambiguities that currently allow people to purchase guns with minimal restriction. Lobbyists also hide behind the second amendment saying it is the constitutional right to bear arms; however, the Second Amendment itself talks about “militia”, an army that will protect the “state” and has rights to bear arms for this specific purpose, not individuals claiming their own defense from imagined enemies. The country has progressed since the time when the Second Amendment was needed to consolidate U.S. boundaries and protect itself against foreign aggression. Ultimately, the reality is that a gun is a lethal weapon; its function and design is to kill. Gun control reform will ensure that there will be further stringent checks to decrease further incidents of violence.
According to an article titled “We need lawmakers to enact the people’s will on gun control” by Monte Frank states, “Currently, under federal law, a person on our terrorist watch list can buy the Bushmaster AR-15 - the weapon used at both the Sandy Hook elementary school and at the Aurora movie theater - in a private transaction, without any questions asked.” Making people undergo background checks will make sure that dangerous people will not acquire a deadly weapon. Right now, potential terrorists can buy assault rifles without being asked anything. Obtaining a gun is too easy, especially when criminals or potential terrorists can just go to a gun store and purchase them. Who knows if they are going to attempt a mass shooting the next day? More gun control laws will fix this and make it significantly harder for bad people to obtain guns.
Buck Maples Government April 18, 2013 Constitutional Right……or Wrong The newspaper headlines read: “26 Dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School”, “Shooter Opens Fire in Colorado Theater. 16 Dead, 58 Wounded”, “U.S. Representative Giffords Shot in Safeway Parking Lot”, Columbine, Virginia Tech…….the list could go on and on. There is no doubt that gun violence is prevalent in society today, which is why the topic of guns and gun control is being argued across the nation. There are compelling arguments for both sides of this debate, but the ultimate principal of gun ownership is written within our Bill of Rights in the form of the Second Amendment stating an individual’s right to bear arms.
