Gun Control Policy Gun control and firearm issues have always been at the top of the most debated topics in American culture and politics. Throughout history, gun violence and cases of mass public shootings have always focused Americans eyes on gun control. The main focal point and the cause of the continuing debate on gun control stems from the ratification of the Second Amendment of the Constitution, which states: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The basis of this Amendment was for national security and the efficiency of the people of the United States to gather together and form a defensive army against foreign militants.…show more content…

The NRA, one of today’s largest gun rights lobbying organizations in the United States, serves to “promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis” (Gettings). With the rise of mobster and gangster activities as well as the illicit usage of firearms, President Franklin D. Roosevelt instilled the National Firearms Act in 1934 in hopes to rid the country of automatic-firing weapons. The National Firearms Act imposed a $200 tax ($2,525 today) on each firearm, and all buyers were required to fill out paperwork subject to the Treasury Department for approval (Gettings). With the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and Robert Kennedy, the Gun Control Act of 1968 quickly passed with major restrictions and revisions to the National Firearms Act. To enforce this act, the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms was created by the Department of the Treasury in 1972. Because of the technological advancements made in firearms and weaponry, the Law Enforcement Officers Protection Act was passed in 1986 to protect officers in the line of duty from getting shot or killed with weapons capable of shooting armor-piercing…show more content…
The main issue at hand in the midst of all the statistics and arguments is within the people themselves. The saying “guns don’t kill people, people kill people” is a testament to the crimes and violence perpetrated today. Criminals do not commit crimes simply because they have access to firearms, but rather they already have a mindset to commit a certain crime with whatever weapon they find most effective. The two most powerful organizations involved in gun control and gun rights, The Brady Campaign and The National Rifle Association, have contributed heavily in gun politics and will further try to keep the country safe while allowing its citizens the right to bear
