Patient care is the number one priority for all nurses, regardless of position or leadership status. Nurses struggle to optimize the quality and consistency of care provided. However, often breakdowns in care occur and it the responsibility of the care team to make things right. Sometimes in the rush of caring for a patient load, care can be compromised. The goal of continuously educating staff in the importance of nursing-sensitive indicators hopefully leads to improved care and a reduction in negative outcomes. Nursing-sensitive indicators include anything relating to the quality of nursing care (Sauls, 2013). This includes a wide range of topics from the incidence of pressure ulcers to patient satisfaction scores. In the case study provided, a better understanding of several nursing-sensitive indicators would help reduce interference with patient care. Some of the basics include, use of restraints, respect for culture and patient wishes, and transparency between the medical staff and the patient/family unit. If hospital wide data was collected on the incidence of pressure ulcers it would provide a good indication of the overall practice level of the hospital and separate units individually. Such numbers in comparison to the national average could help paint an overall picture of where deficiencies in practice might lie and where training and education may be appropriate. Such a study could only be beneficial to the hospital at large and increase patient wellbeing as well as raise satisfaction scores. Also, the patient in this case study was being put in restraints. Restraints should be the mode of last resort and the use should be reevaluated frequently (Use of restraints: MedlinePlus Medical
