Jonathan Lewis Applied organizational Behavior Fall 2011 Leadership & the One Minute Manager Leadership and the One Minute Manager is a book describing how to use and implement the management style that is referred to as Situational Leadership. Two main characters, the Entrepreneur and the One Minute Manager are the focus of this book. The Entrepreneur calls upon the One Minute Manager to get advice on how to handle her employees better. The Entrepreneur goes to meet the One Minute Manger at his office that afternoon. The One Minute Manager explains to the Entrepreneur that to be responsive to her employee’s needs that she will need to find out what their needs are. The One Minute Manager explains his concept of “Different strokes for different folks” (pg 18). All employees are at different stages of development in their job knowledge and abilities, so discovering where the employees are at can help the Entrepreneur better manage the employees. To help the Entrepreneur better understand the concept of treating employees differently the One Minute Manager puts the Entrepreneur on a path to talk to his employees and let them tell their own story about being treated differently. First on the list is Larry McKenzie who has been at his position in human resource development for only three months. The One Minute Manager works closely with Larry because he is still learning the job and the One Minute Manager needs to help him develop the skills and abilities to fully understand his duties in HR. Second the Entrepreneur goes to see Cindy Murrow the director of finance. Cindy tells the Entrepreneur how differently the One Minute Manager treats her. She explains that the One Minute Manager and her work closely together more as a colleague than her boss because of her extensive work knowledge.
