The Effects Of Music Genre On Workout Intensity Richie Palase PSY 201 section: 5279 Professor Porcell February 17th, 2013 Abstract In this study we will discover the effects of music on individuals workout intensity, measuring the output energy the person possesses the amount of weight the person lifts and the added calories the person may burn. The study will consist of multiple groups where we will monitor their body and workout regimen. The different groups will be exposed to different types of music consisting of different genres of music. Labeling the groups according to the music they are exposed to starting with electronic/dance, rock, hip-hop, country, rap, and no music. All subjects had to be in the same workout capacity and same weight range. We gave each person a high physical demanding workout extensive enough and hard enough that if they felt that he had enough they can stop at anytime. Within the groups we had 5 individuals in each different music group with a total of 30 workout test subjects. The researcher’s preliminary hypothesis for the proposed study is that the test group labeled electronic/dance will produce the most intense workout available and the group with no music will tend to quite the workout and not seem to burn the same amount of calories as any of the other groups. Literature Review Psychological Effects Of Music (Endorphins and Hormones) This study aimed to uncover the physiological effects of listening to music during exercise on the secretion of the hormone cortisol and endorphins. The sample that was taken for the study was majors in Sport Science students, - 24 people chosen at random based on the criteria established. Data collecting was done by pedaling a bicycle ergometer exercise for 10 minutes with sub maximal intensity while listening to music. Listening to music during the workout using five
