Most modern historians regard the Puritans as being anti-fun and acted as walking extremist saints where as Morgan stated that, "The Puritans were not ascetics; they never wished to prevent the enjoyment of earthly delights. They merely demanded that the pleasures of the flesh be subordinated to the greater glory of God." The author gives a new spin on the Puritans though providing multiple examples and outlooks on the Puritans love for sex. In my opinion the author did a very good job in conveying his message. The authors viewpoint of the Puritans provides a useful account on the Puritan Culture that relates to the history of America through the barring of different personal liberties.
Like the Puritans, he planned to combat natural inclinations by building a life of strong moral preservation. While Franklin did not have as devoted a belief in God as the Puritans, he did believe in God and believed in the importance of good deeds and services. He also believed that all crimes were punishable, like the Puritans, who believed that God gave punishments to all wrongs. Franklin listed out virtues and sought to accomplish each in a specific order. His notion of virtues differed, however, from the Puritans who believed that being close to God was most virtuous and focused on reading scripture and prayers instead of being good citizens.
Linda Gilbert THEO202_B10_201340 Short Essay #2 Short Essay on Anthropology: Marriage and Divorce Marriage originated with the command from God that it was not right for man to be alone (Gen. 2:18). Despite its Holy intent, marriage has become less of a covenant and more a fashionable arrangement. Moreover, the careless manner in which marriage vows are so easily dismissed in today’s society should cause all Christians to evaluate the biblical stance on the matter, not just those who are in troubled marriages. The Bible teaches that marriage is centered on the union between one man and one woman (Gen. 2:24). This bond is best portrayed in the relationship of a covenant where marriage is seen as a mechanism for growing, healing and maturing through time, mirroring the relationship between God and his people.
Therefore they would not question their role. Marxist also believe religion is ‘the opium of the people’ it provides false promises to the subject class for the afterlife, they believe if they complete this life fully with no complaints they will be rewarded in heaven. Feminists also believe religion is a conservative force, but unlike Marxist who say it keeps the ruling class in power they believe it contributes to maintaining patriarchy. Christianity provides evidence of how religion is maintaining patriarchy, God is traditionally a man ‘our father’, and Eve was created as a ‘helpmate’ for Adam, each of these two examples are telling us that women were not seen as important and they are showing that women are inferior to men. However, before the revolution many different religions were still being discriminated against with voting and public funds, some people in Massachusetts were even jailed for refusing to pay taxes to support their local ministers. The end of the British rule immediately caused people to question the privileged position associated with Anglican churches. Some people would demand relief from taxes because of this religious group. Because of majority of wars to be over religious beliefs , many leaders in the revolution claimed it was dire for the “new nation” to avoid conflicts about religious differences influenced from the past three centuries. Thus separation of church and state came into play, with hopes of keeping public morality and avoiding corrupting embrace from the government.
Danielle Rassi Mr. Battersby APUSH 11 September 2011 DBQ 1: The Influence of Puritan Values The Puritans were a diverse group of people who stood for religious purity. They believed that the English Reformation had not gone far enough in disposing similarities with the Church of Rome, such as hierarchy. Throughout the 1630s to the 1660s the Puritan’s valued religion and their beliefs were displayed in their life style, from the layout of their church centered town to their idea of salvation. Despite the religious rules, “brethren” community, and Puritan work ethic that influenced their social way of life and produced economic success in businesses, their utopian government fell apart at the rise of conflict between religious and profit motives as well as the clash of opposing ideas to their Puritan political system. The social structure of the New England Puritans was a brotherhood.
Once individuals care only about themselves, then eroticism become a restless desire for pleasure. This is because there is a disconnect from the desire to have a lasting, intense, and intimate bond with someone else. I would have to agree with Ricoeur’s analysis here; he is laying out the idea that when eroticism is hand cuffed with other aspects of a healthy relationship it can become a sensual component of sexuality, as long as it is not the dominant force in the relationship. When eroticism is the main goal of an individual “an egoistic cultivation of pleasure wins over mutual exchange.” (pp.207) I believe this is a major reason for our divorce rate in America. People are more concerned with their own pleasures and therefore succumb to the egoistic cultivation of eroticism.
Marriage is not a religious institution. Overall, the argument would focus on the idea that all Americans should be treated equally and how religion should not be a factor for this decision. On the other hand, the opponents would disagree with most of what the proponents had to say. Their main argument would be the idea that same sex marriage is “not natural” and is against the whole purpose of marriage. The argument would revolve mostly around religious beliefs and the fact that they think homosexuality is believed to be “sinful” and that God’s whole purpose was to create marriage for a man and woman to procreate and raise a family.
The males when agreeing with each other and desiring to seem more approachable, relatable, and easy going, would use “fuck” to express their comfort levels and nonchalant-less on the subject matter. Furthermore, they would express their feelings more heavily with “fuck” than with ordinary words that would typically replace “fuck” such as “heck”, “hell”, “really”, and “had sex”. When using informal speech, “fuck” seemed to be heavily emphasized to show connection and comfort. This was also the same but to a lesser extent with females. The females of the family said “fuck” only when very upset or being sarcastic.
“Marry the spouses around you” teaches Muslims that marriage is not only a duty but a necessity to maintain the human race. The Qur’an teaches that marriage provides peace and tranquillity; “You may dwell in tranquillity with them and he has put love and mercy between your hearts”. The essential purpose of marriage is that the Qur’an teaches the true value of marriage and that marriage is highly valued in the Qur’an and the hadiths of Muhammed due to the process of procreation. Pre martial and extramarital sexual relationships are considered as haram due to the Islamic belief that this breaches the marriage contract and a sin against Allah. “Believers are admonished to keep away from the possibility of fornication, and do not come here to unlawful sexual intercourse”.
