Using Sources 4, 5 and 6 and your own knowledge. Do you agree with the view that Indian desires for independence from Britain were caused mainly by the impact of World War 1? When World War 1 broke out in 1914, India rallied to the cause. World War 1 showed the people of India’s loyalty, highlighted their effectiveness and, displayed their capability for self-rule and independence. World War 1 rapidly had political and ideological repercussions causing the Indians hunger for independence to thrive. However the impact of ww1 wasn’t the only factor that caused the desire for independence. Factors like the Rowlatt acts and the Amritsar massacre triggered the Indians to wake up demand change although it could be argued that Indian nationalism existed pre-ww1. In this essay I’ll be discussing to what extent World War had on causing the desire for independence. The outbreak of war in Europe was met with declarations of support across Indian society; by 1914 1 and a half million had volunteered to enlist to fight with Britain. It could be argued that before World War 1 there didn’t seem to be any major desires for independence away from Britain as Gandhi states one of their duties is to ‘offer our lives’ and he also seems proud to call Indians ‘British citizens’ suggesting that the Indians were willing to support the British in the war suggesting positive associations between the two countries and no desire to be independent from them . However Simpson states solidly that Indians only joined to serve there emperor’ he doesn’t mention any other motivation . Also Simpson explains how Gandhi was convinced that ‘the rule of the white man must end’ contradicting Gandhi’s profound respect and ‘willing to do our best to support the British’.
