A desire to protect American citizens was a crucial factor in the US entering the war in 1917. The sinking of the Lusitania by the Germans on a passenger ship was seen as a threat to Americans and created a feeling of hostility against Germans in America as the Germans had clearly killed innocent Americans. It pushed them further towards war in order to make sure their citizens were safe. The Zimmerman telegraph was also very significant. This telegraph which showed a potential alliance about to be formed between Mexico and Germany eventually became the deciding factor that led them to the war.
Historians such as Fischer have the view that Germany was actively seeking a war and this is shown by his theory in Source 1. Another theory is the shared guilt idea which both Source 2 and 3 have evidence to support. Source 2 also points towards the Fischer theory but also that events spiralled out of control, a ‘War by Timetable’ as A.J.P. Taylor said. It is fair to say however that Germany, in any of these scenarios, was very much responsible which is why their aggression points towards the outbreak of a general European war.

In Howard Zinn’s “The Empire and the People”, he explains factors that led to American expansion. “In strict confidence…I should welcome almost any war, for I think this country needs one”, says Theodore Roosevelt to a friend in 1897. A factor of expansion through a war would deflect some of the rebellious energy that went into strikes and protests and shift that energy to an external enemy. It would help unite the people and the government. Another factor was brought to the table by Captain A.T. Mahan of the U.S. Navy, who had great influence with Theodore Roosevelt.

In the summer of 1914 war swept across Europe which turned into a prolonged global struggle. In World War I there were the Allies, which were composed of Britain, France, Belgium, Italy, and the US. The Allies were against the Central Powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria. The Europeans quickly rushed into war but United States at first did not want any part in the war. At the time the President of US was Woodrow Wilson who wanted to stay Neutral.
World War I In 1917 the United Stated had entered World War I on the allied side. American involvement in World War I began because the President and people had been persuaded by plenty of events and pressures that they could not just stand there without taking action. Alongside the fact that the Germans sunk the Lusitania and purposed the Zimmermann Telegram to Mexico to declare war with the United States, public opinion had turned against the Germans and Central Powers. Americans made a major impact in World War I in these specific areas; national economy, public attitudes, and the civili liberties. American particpation had a huge impact on national economy.
The civil war is a central event in America’s development; this war decided what kind of nation we would be. After the confederacy was defeated America would become a nation free of slavery. Since the union had Abraham Lincoln, the president at the time, on their side it was almost inevitable that they would win the long, bloody war. Between Lincoln’s resources, his war tactics, and successes there was no way the union could not be victorious. One of the main reasons for union victory was the abundance of resources available to them during the war.
