Health Care Leader Interview This paper is a transcription of an interview conducted by the author to Mr. Hernandez, a fellow director of nursing (DON) of a home health care agency in Miami, and former supervisor. The author focused the interview on the role of leadership in the health care environment. The author asked Mr. Hernandez to give some professional background and explain the role of a DON as well as sharing his experiences, philosophies, and views of a leader and leadership in general. Mr. Hernandez also explained his challenges as a DON, his vision of leadership in the future in the nursing practice, and provided advice to future leaders. Hernandez said that the most important qualities in a leader are humbleness, accept criticism, identify and solve the team problems, be innovative, adaptable, passionate, but non-judgmental. A leader should also be able to give to the team and not only demand from the team. Accountability is another important quality; the achievements as well as the failures pertain to the leader and the team members. A good leader can communicate in a clear, consistent, and concise manner as well as provide clear directions and guidance on what to do and how to do it. A sense of humor appears irrelevant but sometimes a little joke with the team can go a long way. What is your personal philosophy of leadership? The leader must be part of the team he or she is leading. Leaders have to listen to the team’s opinions and ideas and analyze the situation prior to make any decision because the leader’s decisions affect the entire team as well as each of the team members. The leader must always think about the most good for the most people while still working toward a common goal. Hernandez to a little town far from his hometown. He was the town doctor, and he was good at healing people but not good at listening. Mr. Hernandez’s was surprised when his boss decided to replace him but learned that town doctors not only to heal but also to educate, and more important are part of the town life. In the following assignments, Mr. Hernandez learned from his mistakes and after four years his boss, the one who fired him, retired and recommended Mr. Hernandez to replace him. As chief placement officer, Mr. Hernandez and his team worked more than a year in a new proposal and when were ready to present it to the hospital board, one team member started creating friction among the members. However, the team voted for the original plan and later told Mr. Hernandez that both ideas were good but his honesty and loyalty made the team vote in his
