My risk assessment is based on children aged 5-7 years of age who are going on a school trip to the beach. There are many potential hazards when taking young children out but there are also ways to prevent these hazards as reasonably practicable. The Health and safety at work act states that all businesses must carry out a risk assessment on anything that may be harmful to either staff or service user. The health and safety at work act makes sure that the correct procedures and policies are in place to help to prevent any accidents that may happen. It also there so that if anything does occur, people are aware of how to treat a situation. At times, hazards cannot be prevented but also the hazards can change due to circumstances, vulnerability, age and both physical and mental health. An activity during a trip to the beach, children could be at risk of running away and possibly getting lost. In contrast, if it were an adult or elderly person, the risk would be very low as they have a higher ability to know the dangers of getting lost. During a sunny day, it is less likely for a child to slip and fall rather than on a wet and windy day. This is because slippery surfaces are more likely to cause the falls as there is less friction. The likelihood and consequence of the risk both determine how high or low the risk is. If the risk is higher, it is more likely to happen which means measures should be taken to try and prevent it as far as reasonably practicable. When using public transport to get to the beach, you must make sure that the transport is suitable for the amount of children attending the trip. There are 5 steps to completing a risk assessment, these are; Step 1: Identify hazards, i.e. anything that may cause harm- this means that an employer must check for all types of risks on a regular basis.
