Firearms control and Gun control standoff The debate of Firearm control is highly argued among American citizens. The article “Firearms control” by Helen Shaffer and the article “Gun control standoff” by Kenneth Jost question and debate the legal possession of a Firearm. They attempt to bring up the abuse of firearms, the ease availability of firearms, and lax licensing to be the main cause of crime and violence. The first article “firearms control” takes an emotional approach followed by proven information to prove the point that firearm ownership has clearly been abused, or limitations on the ability to purchase and carry firearms, effectively counter violence. Shaffer begins by stating that “outbreaks of juvenile violence in American…show more content…
Shaffer claims that not only will crime not decrease, but will grow resulting in more violence than ever. Publication of the poll, September, 4, showed that 59 percent of the individuals expressing an opinion favored restricting possession of hand guns, such as pistols and revolvers, to the police; only 35 percent of the respondents were opposed fifty-three percent favored making it unlawful to have a loaded gun in one’s home, and 85 percent approved rigid restraints on use of guns by teenagers. The author Shaffer then gets information from a recent Gallup poll found substantial majorities “definitely of a mind to place some kind of restriction on the use of guns” (13). As Shaffer claims, I as well agree on the statistics and her opinion that it would only make matters worst while others tend to think the opposite. In addition, Shaffer effectively defends her idea that banning handguns will have no effect on reduction of violent crime, but may actually increase instances of gun crimes. This is due to the fact that civilians would no longer be able to defend themselves effectively. The second article, “Gun control standoff” both sides remain unsolved in bitter debate. Gun control continues to bring out the worst in public opinions. Jost states: “Gun control supporters blame the high rate of violent crime and the large number of gun accidents and suicides on the easy availability of firearms and…show more content…
The reason for this is that in order to obtain a concealed weapon license, citizens must first take a class on gun safety, and learn the legalities concerning the use of lethal force. I highly agree with this particular law, only because its a smart idea to be educated on how to properly obtain a concealed weapon, rather than having no knowledge on how to even use the weapon and possibly putting someone's life in jeopardy. By teaching people proper gun safety fewer accidents will occur. Lott and Mustard stated: “allowing citizens to carry concealed weapons deters violent crimes, and it appears to produce no increase in accident deaths” (82). Gun control supporters can count some victories during the past year, including the gun-safety regulations in Massachusetts and the defeat of concealed weapons bill in several states. In all, gun control laws being stricter will gain control over gun violence and decrease the death rate over all. Both articles were well written and had chalk full of statistics and links to other sites to seek more information. They were able to convince me that fire arms should not be restricted, and concealed weapons help to lower crime. To not have possession of a gun in your home leaves you to feel helpless, because of this us civilians would no longer be able to
