Gun Control: the Pros and Cons of Our Second Amendment Right to Keep and Bear Arms It seems that every time you turn on the television in the past few years, gun violence is one of the most reported topics. With the tragedies of the theatre shooting at the Batman movie opening, Columbine High School, Virginia Tech, MIT, and Sandy Hook Elementary fresh on the minds of the public it is easy for the media to blame guns. There is very little said about the actual assailant and more focus put on the type of gun they used. The media wants the public to think that “people don’t kill people, guns kill people”. They were given to us by our founding fathers to ensure that everyone has the ability to pursue life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. They wanted the government to fear the people, not for the people to fear the government. Our rights were given to us to expressly prevent tyranny and the oppression of a tyrannical government. The Second Amendment is vital to the preservation of liberty and freedom. “The government's responsibility is to trust, encourage and rely upon We the People. It is not to infringe upon our God-given rights, especially not enforcement of unconstitutional and liberty-killing violations like "gun control" laws (Barnhart 1). With this being said, not all gun legislation is detrimental to our rights, but rather is for our protection from those who would seek to do us harm. “The underlying gun control bill Democrats wrote includes language intended to crack down on gun trafficking and straw purchases, as well as funding for school safety provisions. But it also includes even stiffer background checks” (Sherfinski 1). Americans are not against all gun control measures, only those that infringe on our rights as American citizens. If the current administration was concerned more about making gun ownership safer, and less about taking away our guns, they would find a more accepting public. Do they think that the criminals are going to give up their firearms just because it’s “illegal” to possess them? If current gun control laws put forth by this administration were enacted, law abiding citizens would be the only unarmed population in this country. This would work out well for the criminals who want to take our wallet of rob your home. We as a people need to stand up and let our politicians know that we are more protected when we are allowed to protect ourselves. If the aim of our government is to protect our schools, then why not post an armed serviceman at ever school. That would solve the problem of not having work for returning veterans. If we, as a people, want to continue to be free than we must protect our right to bear arms. Guns are what won our country its independence, and it is not time to turn away from what got us to where we are today. Crime cannot be totally eradicated, and tragedies will happen whether the murderer is wielding an AK47, a knife, a baseball bat, or just a simple crock pot. The key to preventing senseless crimes like the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary and Columbine High School, is to get rid of the “gun free zones” and allow armed guards and armed teachers. Let the criminals know that if you come here
