Question 1 Leadership is the process by which a person exerts influence over others and inspires, motivates and directs their activities to achieve group or organizational goals. The personal leadership style describes the specific ways in which a manager influences others, and shapes the way in which a manager approaches planning, organizing, controlling, and other principal tasks of managing. In a leadership process, a manager builds a workforce of highly motivated and committed organizational members that works towards the achievement of organizational goals through power, influence, vision, persuasion, and communication. Power is the key component of effective leadership in order to affect other people‟s behavior, and occurs as legitimate, reward, coercive, expert, and referent power. Jack Welch combines different types of power: In his position as CEO, he has legitimate power. His fast rise into top management is a sign of expert power. Through promoting top-performers and firing non-performers in a system of meritocracy based on performance targets, he exerts reward and coercive power. His career as a “self-made man” made him a role-model in charge of referent power. Welch exerts influence mostly through meetings and review sessions, meeting different people of all businesses, discussing opinions, exchanging ideas and reviewing performance. On occasion, he also addresses notes to individuals personally. Welch‟s vision is that human creativity knows no limit, but could lead to great value. The exchange of ideas as well as borrowing them from other companies would lead to the company‟s growth. This incorporates the concept of a boundary-less corporation. He believes in educational training of leadership talents. Welch persuades organizational members through staying visible within the company in order to transport his vision, e.g. his opinions, goals, or
