Running head: Optimism and Health Optimism and Health HUM/111 July 7, 2013 Molly McGuire Optimism and Health Optimism is very important to a person’s physical and psychological well-being. Throughout our lives we are affected in areas depending on whether we are optimistic or pessimistic. When we are optimistic, we look for hope instead of despair. In using optimism in our everyday lives we can improve ourselves physically and psychologically. I am going to discuss the studies from the article “Can Optimism Decrease the Risk of Illness and disease among the elderly?” and how it shows the effects of optimism on our lives. It effects the terms of their adjustment and their coping reactions. The optimistic women were more likely to accept the reality of the situation they were facing. They made conscious efforts to deal with it and had less feelings of giving up. The women made every effort to stay engaged with the important goals that gave them structure in their lives. They realized the reality of threats to those goals and they did not wish their problems away. The optimistic women were ready to move forward and had the attitude of “let me take on this new reality and deal with it.” Acceptance, positive reframing, and use of religion were the most common coping reactions. The use of humor prospectively predicted lower distress. Even though having a diagnosis of cancer is a blow, the optimist accept the things that cannot be changed, as well as putting in the efforts to change those things they can.
