Ethos,Pathos, and Logos in Toni Morrison In 2008 it was time for a new president to take control and lead the United States. There were three candidates to take on this role: John McCain, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama. As America had to decide on who to put their faith and trust in for the next four years; they based their decision on a more logical level than emotional level. Toni Morrison captured this idea but at the same time she used emotional appeals to her advantage. By providing rational proof behind her personal point of view on the judgement, Toni Morrison establishes her character and shows that although she does not often choose to write and share her point of view on such an opinionated and unsheltered political topic, there…show more content…
This method is also found throughout the whole letter so that the readers can build trust towards Morrison. This is especially found in the second paragraph as Morrison begins to share her thoughts and her way of looking at these things. She states that she is selfless rather than selfish at the end of this paragraph by stating, “ I would not support you if that was all you had to offer or because it might make me proud”. This builds the readers trust in Morrison because it shows that shes worried about not only her own benefits but the benefits for the country. By feeling this way the reader is more likely to understand and consider her point of view. She believes that he has the most potential for the production of these effects, which ultimately means he is the superior choice. By the establishment of ethos and it’s combining with reason and emotion, Morrison’s claim becomes more effective. Through all of these appeals Toni Morrison makes her purpose and claim known to the reader. She proves that in her eyes Obama is the best candidate for president and can easily convince others of her opinion with the use of ethos, pathos and logos. Without these appeals the readers wouldn’t be able to built a trust for her to prove that she is a credible writer and her opinion about Obama is valuable.
