When it comes to situations like these, a service user is less likely to want to talk about the issues at hand, forming a barrier to communication. This barrier is unhealthy for the service user as it can cause health problems and affect their wellbeing. | Strategies to overcome this barrier mean that the care practitioner should use the correct verbal and non-verbal communication skills, enabling a supportive and reassuring connection with the service user. Knowing and using the service users preferred communication methods could make them feel comfortable with talking to the care practitioner.
If you don’t know how to speak to the patient it will make them feel as if they are not being heard. Which is not good for the physicians business as well as your position. Medical Assistants should respect their patients and do their best to preserve their dignity. This means respecting their privacy whenever possible. Medical Assistants should have a friendly, pleasant personality, and should work to put patients at ease and calm their fears.
The service users that we support often have appearances and behaviours that make them appear different from the 'general public'. Low motivation, lack of self esteem, high medication and side effects and their personal perceptions mean that their appearance is often unkempt. This often makes them a target for discrimination when out in the community. When accompanying service users out in the community staff are aware and are reminded of this factor and are told to monitor for signs of discrimination. The service user support plan will detail what to do if there are early signs of distress when out and gives clear actions to avoid escalation of symptoms if this is the case.

As carers, you will need to make sure that prejudices, stereotypes and labels do not interfere with the care you provide.
