“Environmental sustainability will never be achieved without population control.” Discuss this statement. Environmental sustainability means treating the environment in a way which allows us to meet the needs of present generation without limiting future generations to meet their needs. It is undeniable that population growth has had an impact on the environment and It can be said that without population control, environmental sustainability will never be achieved. However there are other ways in which environmental sustainability can be achieved. Population control does not only mean limiting birth rates, but may also include control of migration and resource consumption of people. Population control can be a very effective way to help achieve environmental sustainability. This is because it can be argued that humans are responsible for the worsening environmental conditions due to the fact that there has been an increase in industry, deforestation and burning of fossil fuels to meet the demands of the increasing population. For example in the Amazon forest in Brazil an estimated 2.7 million acres of trees are cut down every year to make room for agriculture livestock farms such as cattle ranches and also to meet the increasing demand for timber. By implementing population control, the demands for resources is likely to decrease and also human-induced impacts on the environment will also be more likely. This can be seen in China where the anti-natal policy implemented in 1979 which has helped prevent Chinas population from increasing by an estimated 400 million people which in turn have helped decrease the strain on demand for consumption of natural resources. However, I believe population control alone is insufficient to ensure that environmental sustainability is achieved.
