1. Define biosphere. Describe the part of the biosphere where humans can survive.
Answer: The biosphere is the part of the earth and its atmosphere in which living organisms exist or that is capable of supporting life (American Online Dictionary). The geosphere is where humans can survive and it is the upper part of the planet's continental crust and the portion of the solid earth that provides food and natural resources.
2. Based on this week’s required readings, what are the main causes of threats to the biosphere?
Answer: The biosphere is under stressed and the contributing factor is the overuse of resources that are not renewable due to significant growth in population, consumption of resources and technology.
3. Define sustainability. What do scientists predict will happen in Earth’s future if we do not increase our sustainability practices?
Answer: Sustainability is the quality of not being harmful to not environment or depleting natural resources, and thereby supporting long-term ecological balance (American Online Dictionary). Without increases sustainability practices future generations will not have an adequate supply of clean air, safe water, or a healthy food supply which is needed for their survival.
