As Dr. Campinha-Bacote constructed model, it evolved five different areas: cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, cultural skills, Cultural encounters, and Cultural desire. In this paper I will further demonstrate my understanding of the cultural competence in the above aspects. Cultural awareness, has been described as “the deliberate cognitive process in which healthcare providers become appreciative and sensitive to the values, beliefs, life ways, practices, and problem solving strategies of clients’ cultures” ( Camphina-Baconte, P204). In this process, health care provider, conduct self-examination of one’s own biases towards other cultures and the in-depth exploration of one’s cultural and professional background. The example of the process in this course was that on the assignment # 2, Exploring Your Cultural Background.
Learners will examine the principal psychological perspectives and then apply them to the health and social care sectors to gain understanding of the potential value of psychology in these sectors. On completion of this unit learners will have considered the psychological approach to studying health and social care. The unit encourages reflection, and will be valuable to those learners intending to work with people in a caring capacity. It will also be useful to learners who intend to progress to study at a higher level. The psychological approach is embedded in several other units in the programme and is extended, in particular, in Unit 29: Applied Psychological Perspectives for Health and Social Care, and Unit 30: Health Psychology.
Advocate and Mediator Cyndi White BSHS/441 February 4, 2013 Joe Compton Advocacy and mediation are now being incorporated into the human service field, but what seems to be happening when both models comes together can become challenging. Granted ethical, moral, and legal challenges of the potential dual relationships are considered to be normal, there are certain methods that can be applied to help improve the tension that happens. Within this paper I will present my personal opinion on the integration of mediation and advocacy within the human service field. In addition, there will be an explanation of my personal philosophy and individual approach to advocating and mediation within the department of behavioral health will be given.
& how will I do that task next time? c) How reflective practice contributes to improving the quality of service provision. - It provides the ability to challenge the current methods and enables the exploration of how the practice could be approached differently. Without reflection, cares are not able to look objectively at their actions or take into account the emotions, experience or consequences of actions to improve their practice. d) How standards can be used to help a social care worker reflect on their practice.
Multicultural Awareness Nicole Barnes Walden University Multicultural Awareness Mental health counselor, one must consider the socio-cultural context of the client when conceptualizing client cases in choosing interventions (Laureate Inc., 2010). While being aware of the client’s socio-cultural context, it is equally important to be aware of one’s own, with its bias’ and beliefs so that the client conceptualization is not influenced by a lack of self-awareness (Laureate Inc., 2010). In order to effectively gain an understanding of one’s multicultural awareness and cultural competence a mental health counselor should participate in a self assessment. Multicultural self assessments should assist the mental health counselor in gaining and understanding of who they are, what they believe in, and how to separate those personal aspects from the counseling process (Laureate Inc., 2010). After administering a multicultural self assessment provided by Petrone, my hypothesis concerning my level of multicultural awareness and competence was found to be null.
Unit 1 Task 2 This booklet will explain to you how factors may influence communication and interpersonal interactions in health and social care settings. I will also be explaining, reviewing and evaluating strategies that are used to overcome these barriers to effective communication. We will cover barriers associated with aggression, submissiveness, assumptions, sensory impairments and disabilities, emotional difficulties and communication and language needs. It is also very important that we address how they can be overcome. Communication With the intention of communicating, individuals must efficiently go through a process with the other person in order for the communication to have worked correctly.
The ideal plan for Jane would assist her with addressing her sense of isolation, while simultaneously working to address her desire for a sense of community in accordance with Maslow’s theory of social need. Interaction with the clinical administration should focus on counseling Jane to seek opportunities to form new bonds that could help put her on the path to improving her self-esteem. In addition, her “oral fixation” as theorized by Freud, could be addressed by helping her recognize the consequences of her paraphilia behavior. When interacting with Jane, it is important to express a willingness to accommodate issues in her overall care through the lens of her efforts to adapt to her cultural needs. A nursing professional should assess whether a language barrier could provide an additional obstacle to providing effective care.

The fifth principle urges a health care provider to study and learn the many differences and variations of certain cultural groups so they can better understand them. The sixth and final cross-cultural communication principle is showing kindness to others. When kindness is seen by a person of a different culture and race it can break down the cultural barrier and others will more than likely want to work
