Swinburne would argue that St. Theresa’s character would not lie about a supposed religious experience due to her deep faith in God and morals suggesting that her visions must have been from an external agent. On the other hand, it could be heavily argued that scientific advances could prove otherwise and expose the visions of Christ as an act of the mind ‘playing tricks’. Science has shown that the temporal lobe when stimulated through seizures can produce an altered perception such as religious experiences of this variety. St. Theresa had these visions in the 1500’s when science was in its earliest stages and religion was an answer for everything; these factors appear to support Richard Swinburne’s defence of certain types of characters not lying in support of
Maslows studies are based on individual people like Albert Einstein or Eleanor Roosevelt. He did not build his research on people with learning disability or mental health problems . He studied a small group of an elite student population. Maslow himself stated that: "...the study of crippled, stunted, immature, and unhealthy specimens can yield only a cripple psychology and a cripple philosophy." (see
They found that there was a high inter-rater reliability which showed that the diagnosis of phobia is reliable. However they only looked at social phobias and didn’t consider any specific phobias therefore it cannot be generalised meaning that it is low in external validity. Also they only used interviews which means there are issues with self-report data. Social desirability bias could also occur as the participants may act in a certain way to make themselves look better even though it’s not necessarily their true behaviour. The other way of examining reliability is through test re-test, which is
Rational knowledge is often derived from syllogisms. Unless both the major and minor premises of syllogisms are sound, the logical conclusions drawn from the rational thoughts are unsound. Scientists cannot rely on rational knowledge alone because rational knowledge involved only form and not content (Jackson, 2009). Empirical knowledge is gained through objective observations and a person’s experience in relation to his or her senses (Jackson, 2009). A person who relies on empirical knowledge only believes what can be detected by his/her senses (sight, sound, taste, etc.).
The management of the therapist’s counter transference, through the containment of the group’s projections, is related to positive therapeutic outcome. Self-awareness and self-care are crucial in counter transference management. Regular consultation with a co-therapist or supervisor/consultant can also be very useful. (Association, 2007) I have found it very difficult to research the effectiveness of a non personalised induction in hypnotherapy as all the evidence shows that personalised inductions are far more effective, the only time that it would be difficult to produce a personalised script is if you were to hold a group session or produce a CD or video to focus on a certain situation such as to stop smoking, fear of spiders etc. Personalised inductions are more effective as they treat each person as an individual, in order to do this you need to assess the client, it is important that you have to try to find the most effective way to communicate with your client so that they get the most benefit from the session, in order to do this you need to take into account the clients modalities, explained below.
Hitler may have found himself very successful in his endeavors, but Hitler is not regarded as a success whatsoever. The dictionary definition of success is “ The accomplishment of an aim of purpose.” One may argue that simply setting a goal and reaching it is success; this is not the case because people forget that the goal must have purpose. Purpose is more than simple things that we all want as individuals. A purpose is something that has meaning to it, something important. Having large amounts of money is not a purpose in that of itself, because you have done absolutely nothing with it.
The third stage of creativity is investigating the problem or issue (Ruggiero, 2012). Robinson asserts that math and science are on top of the list in education while the arts are at the bottom. Education was created to meet the needs of industrialism and revolution. Music and art are not prioritized, but schools do not teach dance (Robinson, 2006). The fourth stage of creativity is to produce ideas (Ruggiero, 2012).
The Plaintiffs cannot show causativeness directly and make an attempt to show it through circumstantial evidence provided by their experts. The testimony cannot ascertain that the defects were not caused by an independent effect, since limb reduction defects occur in the babies of mothers who did not take the drug. The Plaintiffs’ experts cannot say that the drug more than doubled their risk of the defect, only that there was a statistical relationship between the drug and the birth defect. Justice Harry Blackmun (J. Blackmun) delivered the opinion of the Supreme Court of the United States (Supreme Court) holding that the Federal Rules of Evidence (F.R.E) provide the standard for admitting expert scientific testimony, not Frye v. United States, because the Frye test was superseded by the adoption of the Federal Rules of Evidence. Dissenting Opinion(s): Justice William Rehnquist Chief Justice William Rehnquist (J. Rehnquist) dissented in part, and agreed in part, and Justice John Paul Stevens (J. Stevens) joined.
Diana Martinez J. Ford English 575 25 June, 2014 Who she is as a person Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “To be yourself in a world that is trying to make you something else is a great accomplishment”. So a question such as “who am I?” really gives the opportunity to differentiate and express who we really are and who we can be. She is not a complex adult who thinks the world is against her, nor is she an overly sophisticated “know- it- all” who does not take time to pay attention to her surroundings. She cannot say she is like every other adult; there are certain things that make her a unique individual. What she can say is that she is progressing to make a brighter future for herself.
Grandin doesn’t believe mankind would be where it is today if not for the autistic discoveries. Great minds like Einstein and Mozart would be considered autistic by today’s standards. Temple stresses the importance of different cognitive thought processes of the autistic mind versus the non-autistic . Three main autistic processes she talks about are: “Visual thinking, pattern minds, verbal mind. Visual thinking is thinking with images instead of streams of words or thoughts, poor at algebra.
