1 Functions of Management Yolanda Green BSHS/322 December 4, 2011 Instructor Frank Scarpone 2 When it comes to operating a successful business, organizations can best achieve the goals and objectives of the company by following the four functions of management. The four functions of management are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. The following paper discusses the four functions of management, and also explains how each function relates to my own organization. The first function of management is planning. Organizing is essential to any company once a plan has been put in place. This function of management consists of a variety of roles employees play on the job, and ensures that employees are providing the needed services for that job. For example, my employer requires that all employees be available to work morning, evening, and night shifts. This is because of the variety of events, and times needed for the set-up or tear down of any event. Employees must be flexible, and available to work as needed. During the summer when the company is the busiest, there may be 2-4 set-ups or tear downs in one day. Sometimes there is not enough staff to covet these jobs. The supervisor works with, and monitors the progress of all employees on aspects such as production, and attendance. When employees have a certain number of attendance issues, they are given a verbal warning. The supervisor also implements a plan that helps him keep track of employee attendance by making a note of it. Once the attendance continues to become an issue the supervisor will then call on the office manager for assistance. The office manager takes the appropriate action needed. When the office manager is no longer able to solve the problem, it is then forwarded to the senior manager for further review. Depending on the severity of the problem, the senior manager will make the final decision. Usually company issues are seldom reviewed by the senior manager because his job mostly consists of the company finances, pay raises, bonuses, and promoting his business. In conclusion, the four functions of management are the key to holding an organization together. However, it is not impossible to work without one of the functions, but not recommended. Each function is dependent on the other because of the service each one provides together.
