Aborting abortion? That has to be the greatest oxymoron of our age Human lives Vs Human choice Pregnancy. A blessing or a burden? My mum always taught me to appreciate the miracle of life seeing as she had to go through IVF to have me. If this should be the case, why in 2012 were 185,000 bright eyed babies banished from life and sentenced with their own prenatal death penalty? The government is now threatening to throw its toys out of the pram and terminate the 1967 abortion act, however, this decision isn’t as high and mighty as it may seem. The Bad Old Days As we all know, the pre 1960s were a tough place for a woman; inequality in the work place, no voting rights and to some extent, no control over their own bodies. By this, I mean if a woman happened to get pregnant inconveniently due to reasons such as no contraception - or in extreme cases, even rape - law and medicine were not on her side. Abortion was frowned upon and illegal meaning (as per usual) women took matters into their own hands. Darning needles, salt shakers and soda bottles (sometimes intact and sometimes with the tops smashed off) are all considered to be innocent, everyday items, right? Wrong. These are all things that have been used to try and unravel a disgruntled pregnant woman’s web of despair. I can practically hear you grimacing as you read...It only gets worse. The best way to terminate a pregnancy was to spend $250 on an illegal “backstreet abortion”. This sort of money couldn’t be found in a back pocket or down the side of a sofa. Desperate times called for desperate measures. With this next story, you’ll realise that “desperate” is just a scratch on the surface of how these unfortunate, undermined women felt. “The wire” was the most common self help scheme around. It was poked inside the uterus until internal bleeding was caused; this progressed into an infection, killing the fetus.
