The general style of the “abaya” is somewhat of graduation robe – lengthy, wide and flowing. Both men and women wear abayas. The women’s abayas are generally balck with some kind of colourful pattern or design. The men’s abayas are simple and plain but, they vary in color: brown, grey, beige or khaki. It is common to see the Iraqi people in abayas; although, the younger generation does not seem to like them much.

The working women wore very simple and plain clothing. They usually wore an apron and had less elegant skirts then the rich. The wealthier men wore expensive clothing, tights a hat, and a cloak. The working men wore more comfortable and cheaper clothing. In the 1500’s weddings and marriages were very different then what they are now.
Flappers represented a freedom of choice and equality to men. The flapper appearance tended to be more masculine than what had been popular in the past. Women would bind their chests with tight cloth in order to give a flat appearance. Flappers would not wear corsets to define curves, overall the body frame appeared more boyish. Flappers cut their hair in short styles, such as bobs and shingles which was opposite of the long hair known in the past.
Secondly, we have Sugar, she is an orphan with her own style. She is wearing a Victorian look alike dress which is black and has an open flurry collar with a white long sleeved shirt that comes out from under the long black sleeves. The shoulders have a padded effect, the skirt is a big puffy skirt, with lots of white layers under the black skirt to make the dress pop out. She is wearing skin coloured tights and black low heel shoes. She has a big black bow on top of her head and has a tight but heavy bun.
Teenagers in the 1950’s vs. 2013, Then and Now So if you were a typical teenager in the 1950’s there are a few things that would make you different just in the way you dress. The popular dress for guys were jeans and white T-shirts, leather jackets, greased back hair or flat tops and some version of a converse shoe. Girls mostly wore dresses and had longer hair styled many different ways including a beehive style. Today guys and girls are wearing things that push the limit in clothes and hairstyles. Clothes are more important now in expressing who you are as a person and the types of clothes you wear tell a lot about you.
Even though some women don't have everything they want, they do have the same basic rights that men have. In Stanton's time, a married couple was seen as one person, but now a married woman can still be seen as an individual. They can vote, have a job, and be independent – things that a woman in Stanton's time could never have done. They can also act out more behavioral wise. They do not have to stay in the house all day with the children and obey their husbands.
Women wanted shorter skirts because they liked the general trend that flappers were setting. Manufacturers did everything they could to stop reducing the length of skirts but despite their efforts, women’s demands overwhelmed the clothing brands. (p. 79) Flappers wore short skirts, short sleeves, and sometimes they even wore no sleeves. The other fashion change that happened was hairstyle change. (p. 80) Young women really loved the bobbed hairstyle.
