Hundreds of years ago a man named William Shakespeare was writing several plays that are still well known today, such as Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Nights Dream. Shakespeare was born in 1564 and died 52 years later. He fell in love with Anne Hathaway at age 18 and together they got married and had 8 children. Throughout his life time he wrote 37 plays and 154 sonnets. In addition to writing, he also acted some of the minor parts in his plays. William Shakespeare was a very wealthy man and he and his company paid for the Global Theater to be made. It was built in 1599 in London. The clothing they actors wore had to match their social status and in most parts the costumes did not match the scene in the play. The clothing in Shakespeare’s life was very different than what it is now in the 21st century. The wealthier women wore very fine linen with lots of embroidery. They also wore many layers and their skirts were always very full and long. The working women wore very simple and plain clothing. They usually wore an apron and had less elegant skirts then the rich. The wealthier men wore expensive clothing, tights a hat, and a cloak. The working men wore more comfortable and cheaper clothing. In the 1500’s weddings and marriages were very different then what they are now. The legal age for a girl to get married was 12 and for boys it was 14! Marriages were often arranged so that both families would benefit. There was very little choice for the girl to choose who to marry and most often the couple would meet for the first time on their wedding day! The weddings usually took place in a church and people would come and bring gifts. During the marriage the law stated that the husband had full rights over his wife.
