“I Was…Never an American; I Was Immediately a New Yorker.” How Is Changez’s Sense of Identity Altered over the Course of the Novel?

In Mohsin Hamid’s novel The Reluctant Fundamentalist the narrator Changez is unsure of who he is, and whilst certain personality traits remain, his sense of identity is changed significantly by the novel’s conclusion. Changez adopts the New York culture as his own when he moves to New York to study at Princeton university. However, throughout the monologue he is constantly reminded of his life and family back in Lahore. He has difficulties living his true identity. Born and raised in Pakistan, Changez spends as an international student an influential time in the U.S. and adapts to the particular way of life of this western meritocratic country. Changez was “one of only two Pakistanis in (his) class, two from a population of over 100 million souls”. When changez graduates from Princeton University and secures a job at underwood Samson he seems to be pleased and excited with his new life and opportunities he has been given. He states that “Princeton inspired me in the feeling that my life was a film in which I was the star and everything was possible”. this is all at the beginning of the novel when Changez considers himself to have been successful in America, and quickly adapts to the New York ways of life. The 9/11 terrorist attacks on the world trade centre are a major turning point for changes in his search for his sense of identity. Changez initial reaction to “smile” and “to be remarkably pleased” when he heard of the terrorist attacks is an abnormal response to the attacks and could be seen as a reason for his identity to be altered once again from being a New Yorker to a Pakistani. Changez explains to the reader that he “was caught up in the symbolism of it all, the fact that someone had so visibly brought America to her knees”.
