Resting on his considerable laurels from the aqueduct, he developed the plans for the St. Francis Dam. He was so immensely respected and popular that nobody thought to question or oversee the designs that he came up with. Sadly, there were several fatal flaws in both the design and location of the dam which resulted in a catastrophic rupture at 3 minutes to midnight on March 12, 1928. A wall of water initially 180 feet high raced through San Francisquito Canyon and then down the Santa Clara River Valley, devastating the towns of Piru, Fillmore, and Santa Paula before emptying into the Pacific Ocean at Montalvo between Oxnard and Ventura some 5-6 hours later. The flood caused immense property damage and left at least 450 and possibly up to 600 people dead.

However, five of them died on their descent as a storm engulfed the mountain. Mount Everest stands at 8,850 meters above sea level, and its summit ridge separates Nepal and Tibet; it is the tallest mountain on Earth and also one of the deadliest. The popularity of climbing the mountain exploded after two individuals, Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay of Nepal, first completed the feat on May 29th, 1953. Everest became this whole new sensation, and many flocked to test their abilities against the giant.
Lake Vostok may be the earth’s greatest unsolved mystery. It has been around for millions of years, and has been host to earth’s coldest temperatures. As modern day technology gets more advanced it is being compared to Jupiter’s moon Europa. Discovered in 1977 by American, Danish and, British scientists you cannot help but to think just what lies beneath the tremendously frigid surface of this lake. It is tough to imagine just how breathtaking this lake is because of the endless possibilities of life forms that can be living there.
I believe it would have been magnificent. I have the distinct pleasure of living near Mount Rainier in Washington State. Mt. Rainier is an active volcano that could destroy the surrounding area with only a short notice. However, even with this ever-present danger there lies unparalleled beauty.
“Even in South Central Africa, which has always been exceedingly prolific in great herds of game, it is probable that all its quadrupeds taken together on an equal area would never have more than equaled the total number of buffalo in this country forty years ago.” (Hornady, 1889, p387). This great animal was the life’s blood of the Native American people and was used for everything from food to clothing and tools for just about any everyday job. Although North American Bison were hunted by Native Americans for centuries, western expansion in the 1800s brought the bison to near extinction. The great herd It is a well- known fact that Native Americans hunted the bison for thousands of years with what seemed to be no impact on the enormous population of the great herd. Archeological studies have uncovered proof that Native Americans used virtually every part of the bison for almost all aspects of everyday life, from clothing to shelter and tools, even for jewelry.
Elevated thousands of feet above the sea level, dotted with steep mountain peaks, carved with deep valleys and covered in thick vegetation, Andean territories seamed to be the worst place to build even if often earthquakes were not taken to account. Inca capital city, Cuzco, the place where their empire started from, is not only still inhabited, but is a large city visited by numerous tourists. Even though many Inca structures were destroyed during colonial period and the stone from their walls was used for Spanish buildings, there are still many examples of famous Inca architecture. Not far from the city a wall complex of Sacsayhuaman, even though built before Incas but later expanded by them, demonstrates same techniques but on much larger scale. Two other sites, Machu Picchu and Ollantaytambo, impress by their locations on top of the mountain.
For an example, from Gould’s experience, Gould has vivid memories that he have went to Devils Tower, Wyoming when he was at age of fifteen with his family. He remembers that the tower he has seen was look like vertically from the dead flat Great Plains. But as Gould’s dad drove closer to the tower, the Devils Tower looked like a conjoined mat of hexagonal basalt columns. The tower looked like forming a perpendicular junction. He couldn’t forget this because the huge size of the Devils Tower gave him a big impression.
My First Elk Hunting Trip by Colin Hillmer It was a cold day in the mountains of Colorado. I was hunting for big elk. The air was moist like it was going to rain soon. As I sat and looked out my spotting scope I saw a herd of elk a mile away. It felt awesome to see my first herd of elk.
Tornadoes VS Hurricanes The United States offers many horrifying weather conditions which put most of people on our toes. Tornados and hurricanes are both similar in that they are both Mother Nature’s creation for disaster, but they differ in size, power, and predictability. These conditions produce relentless winds and flow of down pour. Hurricanes and tornados have the ability to kill anything that gets in their twirling path and indeed are human’s most expensive experience known to mankind. Hurricanes are born over warm, tropical oceans, because they are generated by water vapor produced by the warm water surface.
Two men by the names of Michael Lang and Artie Kornfeld had a dream. They were inspired by the wonderful nature filled farms in Woodstock, New York. They looked out into the distance and pictured an outdoor concert filling a field of peace driven hippies. Together, the concept of The Woodstock Festival of 1969 began. With the help of two investors, John Roberts and Hoel Rosenman, they began the partnership of Woodstock Ventures.
