Substance abuse and dependence are a complex phenomenon that defies a simple explanation or description. There are sometimes many factors that can contribute to an individual’s experimentation with, use, and perhaps their subsequent abuse of the substance. Whatever the contributing factors to the substance may be, the actions and effects exerted by drugs of abuse underlie all substance abuse and dependence. In order to understand substance abuse and addiction we must first understand how these substances affect an individual’s behavior and its effects biologically, cognitively and emotionally. Risk factors for Betty are that there is a genetic predisposition for alcoholism, (Machado, 2001) as Betty’s father and brother were both alcoholics. Second, there were many psychological factors that may have been responsible for Betty’s addictions. She was first introduced to alcohol was as a young child with her mother placing Bourbon in hot tea to ease her ailments. Her first real experience with alcohol was due to peer pressure and during her first marriage and subsequent demands/roles of her second marriage. In 1964, she developed a pinched nerve in her neck that caused her excruciating pain. She was prescribed many pills for her pain and consequently her pills became an avenue of escaping physical pain and made her more vulnerable to increased alcohol usage. Raising four children sometimes by herself due to her husband’s political demands she had a hard time coping though she often second-guessed herself, assuming that people could not like her or appreciate her for who she was. She was self-conscious that she had not made the grade as a dancer or obtained a college degree. She developed the attitude
