The Three Primary Reasons For The Fall of Rome There is an old, but popular saying: Rome wasn’t built in a day. I think the same about how it fell. It took probably a couple of months for Rome to collapse. Here are my three reasons – too foreign invasions, several natural disasters, and the rulers. First of all, the fall of the Roman Empire was caused by foreign invasions. In Document C, there was a map that showed the groups of people that conquered Rome. It shows that the Huns from China took over Rome. So did the Vandals and Visigoths in 439 CE and 418 CE. Also, on a timeline, it states that invasions began from 27 BCE and they ended during 476 CE, when Rome fell. Then means that Rome was continuously being invaded for about four hundred years. In addition, severe natural disasters were another step leading to the collapse of the empire. According to Document F, many earthquakes took place. They weren’t just ordinary earthquakes. They were violent and destructive earthquakes. Earthquakes weren’t as bad as the tsunamis and floods, though. Fifty thousand people lost their lives in just the city of Alexandria alone, due to a flood. Also, plagues were spread around. Many people got diseases. Most of them had a sever case of the measles. Because of these diseases, the population reduced from a million people to two hundred fifty thousand. The last reason that caused Rome to fall was the rulers. According to Document A, there were twenty-two rulers just during a fifty-year period, from 235 CE to 285 CE. Because there was a frequent change in rulers, the empire was instable, which was violent to the leadership. The empire could easily be conquered. Also, on the Background Essay, it said that the rulers became too worldly and lazy. They stopped having many children and instead had one or two. They loved luxury, and stopped caring for the people.
