Why Major in Theater

Gavin King 12/7/12 A&S FINAL Why am I a theatre major? My major is theatre, to be exact a “Performance Major”. Many would say that this isn’t a “real career” or “this isn’t something someone who wants to be successful should major in”, and well they are right. Majoring in theatre isnt going to provide a career, it will provide a life style and as for being successful, most likely I won’t but I will be happy. There a very few things you can do with a degree in theatre. Careers range from radio personal to drama teachers. A degree in theatre is seen as a V.I.P pass in the theatre world because with this you get into professional shows faster than if you didn’t have a degree. You can get paying performing jobs and if you do get a paying job, you get paid more than someone who doesn’t obtain the degree. Most people who major in theatre usually double major because making it in the theatre world is very tough but once you get in, you’re in for the rest of your life. So the question occurs why would someone major, nevertheless why would I major in theatre? The answer is simple, because this is my purpose and passion. Those of us to decide to do this don’t wake up and say “I am going to become a actor and major in theatre”, we were chosen. This may sound weird but everyone is chosen for what they do. Doctors are born to heal the soul, police officers are born to protect the soul, therapists are born to fix the soul and performers are born to entertain the soul. We don’t perform for our entertainment; we perform and live to entrain the world. The applauds is our food and energy that keeps us moving, it keeps our hope alive, the hope of someday being able to perform in front of millions. I am majoring in theatre because like I stated before , this is my passion and purpose. I know this because no matter what I do, I am always pulled back in the world of theatre. My
