He sailed around Ireland and then north and west, making landfall on the morning of June 24th. The exact landing place has never been identified, however, it has been variously believed to be in southern Labrador, Newfoundland, or Cape Breton Island. As early as the beginning of the 16th Century, French expeditions to the New World had already begun. They hoped to settle in Brazil and Florida but the Spanish quickly booted them out of those regions. France also hoped to seek territory in the Americas for a place that certain religious groups could settle. In 1562, Jean Ribault and 150 Protestants from Normandy were finally able to establish a settlement on Parris Island in South Carolina. However, when the colony failed, other French expeditions settled further south in Florida and made friendly ties with the local Indians.
Late 15th C. Spain became united and due to the fact that the Portuguese controlled trade routes in Africa and Asia they looked west. Christopher Columbus, exploring in the name of Spain, discovered the Bahamas in 1492. Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) divided SA land between Spain and Portugal. Christopher Columbus “sailed the ocean blue” in 1492. He is given so much credit for not being the first persons who settled on American land, actually Native Americans (the Arawaks) were already living there. Although Columbus came about American land which he called “The Indies”, he was set out on his voyage to find Asia, Columbus did not expect to find the Americas, not to mention how welcoming and generous the Arawaks were- he clearly took advantage of them by leading to killing all Arawaks , allowing them to become nonexistent, he also is given credit because he “proved the world is round” actually, he was not the first person that proved this- therefore, Columbus was falsely given credit for finding the Americas, proving “the world is round,” and should not be considered a hero or have a holiday for his unexpected finding and cruel treatment to the

Many Spaniards died of disease and the survivors abandoned the colony.
And during this first voyage in 1492, he landed in the new world and the outcome for this discovery was introduction to civilization. This is a reason why Americans should celebrate Columbus Day as a national holiday because thanks to the discovery, America was introduced to the world of civilization. According to the article by Michael S. Berliner he states that “Prior to 1492, what is now the United States was sparsely inhabited, unused, and undeveloped. The inhabitants were primary hunter- gatherers , wandering across land , living from hand- to mouth and from day to day”. 5 When Columbus met the indigenous people he thought that they were “guileless and generous”.
