Leif Ericson- Many believe the first person to visit America was Christopher Columbus but this is no true. In the year 1000 Leif Ericson discovered this “New World”. They were tossed out into the ocean until they found an unknown location where they would find grape vines. They called this “New World” Vineland or Wineland. Precisely where Vineland was is not certain, but this place was part of Nort America. That leaves Leif Ericson the discoverer of America. John Cabot- John Cabot was an Italian explorer who set sail in 1497. While Christopher Columbus was exploring the West Indies John Cabot went farther north, he sailed on the permission of Henry VII of England. He said that what the people called South America was not part of Asia so he named it the New World. So when people back then thought of this New World they thought of Americus Vespucius. Not long after people insisted the New World should be named America in his honor, America was on the map in 1507 Florida- In 1513 Ponce De Leon sailed north west from the Bahamas he had found new land at this time. On Easter Sunday he left off the shores of the new land. The Spain name for Easter was La Pascua de los flores so De Leon called the new land Florida. Spaniards were very religious people and most often named the new lands discovered and settlements from either saints or religious events. Lost Colony- After Raleghs first attempt to found a colony, he had made one more attempt to found a colony in Virginia in 1587. But this time his attempt was more dreadful the people who had settled here had entirely disappeared.
