Who rules America? In theory America is ran by small groups of people with extreme wealth and power. These are people who own the mega corporations, high ranking military officials, upper echelon political figures, senators and congressmen, and other people of higher standing. Basically anyone who has influence on the economic and/or political structure of the country. What three primary mechanisms by which the ruling class maintain themselves as a cohesive class? The first mechanism by the ruling class is that they economically coincide with other political parties that have their same interest. I always knew that the more money you have means the more power you have; but I never really knew how it was structured. America is an capitalist country. So I learned how the hierarchy of power and wealth dictates how the country is ran. I also learned about the how the military plays a part of the power elite. Who are the power elite? The people on top of the economic, political, and military ladder. These people are usually known as the 1%. That’s an acronym for the 1% of the United States population. According to Mills, from where do they get their power? According to Mills the power elite get there power from great institutions that is based on power, wealth, and prestige. Basically more often than not, they inherited the power and place in the power elite. What does Mills mean by power? How does his argument standup in 2013? What Mills means by power is that people who have the ability to make an impact or influence the economy, political, or military decisions. These people influence America as a whole, weather it is outwardly or behind the scenes. I believe that his argument is still very much viable today!
