The Worst Villain In Ken Kesey’s, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, the reader sees how a mental institution is controlled by a corrupt system. Nurse Ratched is the true villain in the story because of the way she treats the men with her pure evil, and dark, cold heart. She humiliates the men, and takes their dignity away. She goes against everything they believe in. In essence she is a dictator and takes advantage of the other workers, and the patients. Nurse Ratched humiliates the poor patients, which makes them lose faith in humanity, and lose their dignity. They no longer feel like they are men because during the therapy meetings she always makes them talk about topics that are reasons for why their life is horrible. Every time Mcmurphy asks if they could go on a field trip she would tell him that she must get permission from the doctor,and the patients on the ward. She made it impossible for McMurphy, and the other patients to do what they want. McMurphy asks her nicely if she could turn the volume of the music down, she told him that the older patients have nothing but the music. She does not care about the older patients she just wants to make everyone's life miserable. If she found out that any of the patients like something she would make sure it was removed, and if they hate it, she would have more of it. An example would be when she leaves the music on and they want it to be off. When the doctor helps McMurphy by letting him, and the younger patients have the tub room, Nurse Ratched is extremely furious because she tries to stop it from happening. Every time something went wrong she would gladly take away their privileges, and did not care how they felt. “... She takes the patients freedom away, and makes their stay at the hospital even worse. She does not let the men get a say in what they want, if they want something they get it after a long time, or they just do not get it at all. She knows the weak spots for all the patients, and just where to peck at them. The patients try to please her during the group meetings by telling her their darkest secrets, and then they feel deeply ashamed for how she made them act, even though they have done nothing. She maintains her power by the use of shame and guilt against the patients, making them feel horrible. Ratched has complete control of every aspect of the ward, even control of her very own emotions. Bromden describes Ratched as being like a machine, because she can control everything including her emotions. She does not let the other workers in the ward give any new ideas on how to control the ward. If they do try to give her new ideas, she will give them a cold, machine like face that will make them retreat by forgetting about their idea.
