Ben Wood Honors English 1 Mr. Wood 1-2-13 Everybody, in some way, should take responsibility for their actions,and accecpt the consequences, whatever they may be. The story, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, takes place in Maycomb county, Alabama in the 1930's. In the story a black man named Tom Robinson is falsely accused of assult and rape. During th trial the so called victim, Mayella Ewell, lies to the jury about what happened. Tom is then convicted and sent to jail where he dies an unjust death. In To Kill a Mockingbird the character Mayella is ultimatley the one to be held responsible for Tom Robinson's death because she has a lack of self control, develops a minor relationship with Tom, and lies in court. These skeptics would go on to say that when Mayella did not recall if Tom hit her,but then goes back on herself, is just her slipping up on her statement. If she did just slip up on her statment how could she go as far as completely contradicting her self. Also how could she slip up so bad as to greatly affect the trial and not let anyone know that she actually did get her words mixed up. They would also go on to say that when Mayella said that she fought and hollered as hard as she could was just an overstatement. Even if she made an overstatment, in Tom's testimony he says that she did not fight or holler. Also, according to Tom's hearing Mayella would have no real reason to fight and holler because she came onto him, giving her no real reason to become threatend and start fighting and screaming. The same opposers would go on to state that Tom trully did commit the crimes of beating and raping Mayella Ewell. But do not foreget that in Bob's hearing, Atticus provided evidence that could lead to show that Bob Ewell could have been the one who beat and raped her. The evidence displays that Bob is left handed, and Mayella had cuts and bruises on the left side of her face. It also shows that Tom's left hand is basically useless, so Tom is pretty incapable of performing the beating. Mayella's testimony was proven wrong, because Tom's testimony completely contradicts
