When Proctor returned continues to testify against his wife’s accusation, he becomes overwhelmed by the girl’s façade, along with Mary’s and Danforth’s accusations against him about him being a liar. Out of anger, Proctor storms from the court in a feeble attempt to maintain his reputation as a truthful man. In doing such, he exclaims, “God is dead…a fire is burning!” (Miller 111) Proctor’s exclamation against the court late in Act III, only emphasizes the injustice Proctor believes is evident in Salem, and that there is a direct parallel among the trials, fire/ Satan, and the nonexistence of God. These very parallels Later, Proctor is imprisoned for his actions and chooses to avoid death by signing a confession which he knows to be false. As both Danforth and the judges oppress over him, Proctor cannot bring himself to sign, and ultimately leads himself to his own death.
When his wife became sick he began to get emotions for her. He committed adultery with Abigail against his wife. The story of the Salem Witch-Hunt begins within the household of Reverend Samuel Parris when his daughter became sick, and her cousin fell ill also. The doctor was quick to jump in and diagnose both girls, Betty Parris and Anne(Abigail) Williams, as being “bewitched”. The two girls exhibited fits such as screaming, throwing things around, and contorting themselves in awkward positions (Blumberg,2007).
Excessive Pride Overtaken by rumors, the small town of Salem takes a turn for the worst when children make accusations that many of the townspeople partake in witchcraft. John Proctor, a well known farmer in the area, becomes one of the accused. Stuck in a paradox, he holds to his honorable name by defending himself and others. John Proctor fit the description of a tragic hero because of his tragic flaw of committing adultery and his predictable downfall of death. While working in Proctor’s home the previous year, Abigail engaged in an affair with Proctor.
"Why, it is a lie" Proctor will have felt a lot of pressure on his shoulders in the short amount of time he had to decide his own fate as he had two different sides chirping in his ear. In the end, Proctor decides to keep to his own laws and morals and tears up the paper in which stated that he had done work with the devil. And so Proctor was hanged with his dignity
Conflict certainly exposes the true qualities of a person that might have been kept deep inside never to be revealed, however due to the pressure of a bad situation the ‘real’ person is displayed. McCarthyism has been shown in the play “The Crucible”, which was practiced by Abigail. McCarthyism is paranoia and finding scapegoats and blaming innocent people for things they did not do. Many lives were ruined because of this. In the Crucible, Abigail is tormented by the fact that she had been caught out having an affair with John Proctor.
After this event panic spreads through the village as people believe that witchcraft is afoot. During this period in Puritan Salem the church and the government acted as one unified force meaning when the accused are put to trial they also stood before their church (whose beliefs were very exclusive and orthodox). Witchcraft was believed to be the work of the devil and the condemned were put to death for acting upon their personal beliefs. This is a perfect example of persecution. The girls who were seen dancing are condemned of witchcraft and then reprimanded for going against the communities’
As Proctor own feelings of disgust overcome him, his confession to the affair with Abigail brings him forward to the court where Danforth's ultimatum, "you are either with the court or you will be courted, there is no in between" conveys the juxtaposing value the town of Salem holds, you conform or become exiled. So when the proceedings of the witch trials come to town the Putnam s take that as a way to take Rebecca down. They accuse her of killing their babies be conjuring up her spirit and killing them before they come out of the womb. Unfortunately for Rebecca she fall victim to the mass hysteria in Salem, and is thrown I jail because of it. So being the good Christian she is when Judge Danforth asks her to confess she does not.
