By linking the aspects to the history of our founding fathers the speech was structured and strong. President Obama uses the theme of history and the method of pathos to create patriotism in his speech. President Obama creates a patriotic tone in the speech by mentioning all the “ups and downs” our country faced such as when he says “Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life. They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.” Leaving the audience with a sense of pride because this
The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” Mandela begins taking charge and challenging the process right from his first day in office. When the leader of his bodyguards, Jason, asks for more men he supplies him with white bodyguards previously in the SAS. Jason protests but Mandela explains to him that people see him with his bodyguards and they are a direct reflection of him. “The past is the past. We look to the future now.” “Forgiveness liberates the soul.” By insisting the bodyguards all work together, he’s calmly modeling the way for others.
Why or why not? Machiavellian techniques are admired in today’s politics and corporate structure. In the “Prince”, Machiavelli emphasizes the characteristics of a Prince in an entity and advocates that a prince must exert for the best of the state even if his decisions are unethical and violent. Hence, a Prince must be ready to defend his territory and act not to be virtuous even if it includes destroying the old Prince and manipulating the law and government. Moreover, these arguments are validated for every nation and government since Machiavelli suggests, “the end justifies the means”.
Martin Luther King called out to the right minded people “Now is the time to stand as tall proud unfettered men and it is time to cast off the shackles of oppression and go forth into the light of freedom.” (Reality Magazine 1996-2006) Simply because of the actions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. our entire world has benefited from his strength and trying efforts, because of his outstanding leadership which brought out hope and determination for change to millions people. His philosophy for life and humanity was
This was important for Hitler’s rise to power as he gained huge population and support due to his impressive speeches. Hitler was also constantly on the ball with what he wanted to achieve and was ruthless and determined in getting it. This made him a strong central leader for Germany, just like the Kaiser who had been in power just 15 years earlier. This also helped Hitler in his rise as many people were still pining for a strong dictator and didn’t believe in a democratic government. Hitler was also very good at reorganising the Nazi Party from 1924 to
One theme that we can see in The Prince is a sense of History. As a scholar himself, Machiavelli specifically writes “a prince should read history and reflect on the actions of great men.” He refers to this as an exercise for the mind. Machiavelli makes an argument that in order to be successful, one must study the leaders of it’s past. You must study the successes but mainly the failures of the leaders to know what not to do. A famous quote in the book is “the presence of sound military forces indicates the presence of sound laws.” With this a relationship is built between the development of states and war.
In this paper I will prove using the trait theory, how Amin showed great promise during his years in the army but failed at becoming a developed leader according to Howard Gardner’s theory later in his life because deep down he was a follower at heart. The trait theory is a leadership theory that says that people are born with inherent traits and that some of these traits are well suited for leaders and the right combination of these traits in one person increases the chance of them becoming a good leader. Idi Amin possessed several traits which were suited for leadership. When he was a Ugandan officer in the King’s African rifles, Amin was believed by many to be an upcoming leader.
Niccolo Machiavelli was an important renaissance thinker in the 16th century because he portrayed the elements of humanism, secularism, and skepticism. He showed these renaissance characteristics in his book called, ‘The Prince’. The book was aimed towards new leaders on how to gain, maintain, and expand their power. While Machiavelli wrote his book, he observed on how some leaders ruled during his time. Machiavelli came up with the idea to write his book ‘The Prince.’ He wrote all the things that he observed from studying leaders during his time.
Virtù is the ability directed toward the achievement of certain goals, and it is the most vital quality for a prince. An example of when a prince needs virtù is when he needs to oppose fortune. On page 104, Machiavelli says, “… I think it may be true that fortune is the ruler of half our actions, but that she allows the other half or thereabouts to be governed by us.” He goes on to say how a prince should oppose fortune. He says, “… Men can make provisions against it by dykes and banks, so that when it rises it will either go into a canal or its rush will not be so wild and dangerous.” Virtù is the human energy or action that stands in
During the Civil War, Cromwell commanded his troops with courage, valour, bravery, and employed great tactics at the battles of Naseby, Marston and many others. His contribution to democracy and politics relating to the people of England towered above any other. And finally, in the early years of his reign as “Lord Protector” Cromwell brought peace, harmony, and unity throughout the British Isles. Against: Although, at first, Cromwell may have been fighting for democracy, not dictatorship, towards the end of his control, he became power-hungry, strict, cruel, and similar to King Charles. For example, In 1649, Oliver Cromwell made a speech in which he said: “We fought for a world in that the voice of the people is heard; now we have that world.” But, just four years later in 1653, he made a speech wherein he said: “It is high time for me to put an end to your sitting in this place, which you have dishonoured by your contempt of all virtue.
