Boesman and Lena is a play written by Athol Fugard in the 20th century. This is the story of two scavengers who are on their way to Swartkops, and they are carrying everything they possess. Then, their relationship turns into a nightmare. They get mad and each other. They then meet an old black man which Lena is nice to but not Boesman. From this, we can ask ourselves “what is the importance of OUTA to Lena?” First of all, we will see that Lena needs Outa for protection. And then, we will see that Outa is important to her because Lena is alone. During this play, we can clearly see that Lena really needs the old black man (also known as Outa). As soon as she sees the old man, she wants him to come and stay by the fire with Lena. As Lena and Boesman are mad at each other, Lena ignores Boesman and call Outa over: “LENA (ignoring Boesman) we got a fire! ... Come over! ... to hell with you I want him”. This quote really shows that Lena wants the old man with her, that she doesn’t care about anything Boesman says. But then, there is a quote that proves us that Lena needs Outa for protection because she says: “LENA: (Running quickly to the old man) Watch now, Outa, you be witness for me. Watch! He’s going to kill me”. This quote tells us that Lena needs someone to protect her because Boesman and Lena are not friends anymore they dislike each other, and Boesman is very harsh, and violent. So then, Lena is now scared to be around and to talk to Boesman. The protection of the old man for Lena is not the only thing that makes Lena wanting to keep him, but also because she is alone. In second, Lena has also kept the old man with her because she feels alone. She has no one to talk to since Boesman is not the same as he was couple of years ago. She wants someone to keep her company. We can see it in act 1 page 215 that: LENA: Outa….you… (Patting herself)…Lena…me… OLDMAN:
