What makes us human? As humans we live very different and complex lives compared to any other animal on this planet. Although many believe in opposing Religions or choose to dress in ‘obscure’ ways we still have one thing in common, one thing that we cannot changed; this is being human. But there are many ways that make us human such as our upbringing, sociologists believe that there are two ways of upbringing the first being nature. Nature is the argument that when we are born, we do things because this is the way nature intended it to be. The way we act, the way we talk, the way we smile and the way we walk are all natural things. Other sociologists believe in ‘Nurture’, nurture is the argument that the way we act is connected to our upbringing. Many sociologists believe this because there is evidence that nurture is true. For example the discovery of two infant girls called Kamala and Amala who were lost in the jungle in India (1918). The girls had been found living with wolves, in a cave-like den. They girls both ran in a stooped crouch and were afraid of humans, much like a wolf. They also did not show any human emotion such as laughing or singing. They preferred to eat with dogs in a compound (once captured) and ate by pushing their faces into food. This is hard evidence that Nurture is true and that society shapes the individual. However in 2005 a family were discovered in Turkey that was meant to be the find of the century, a family who walked on all fours. The family are poor and live in a small village, 7 daughters and 1 son walk on all fours. Many believed that they were genetic throwbacks and many scientists were keen to discuss why they walked in such a way. Humans are bipeds which means that we walk upright, we are the only animal to walk upright at all times. Some animals occasionally walk upright such as chimpanzees but none have mastered
