We are governed by public and private interests. These interests are based on our very own constitution that is set up to give everyone an opportunity to succeed in our growing culture. American Exceptionalism is partially a reflection of our nation’s long history, but Americans can tend to be ethnocentric and judge other cultures by the standards of their own. When a lot of people think of America, they think about a country that is made up of a mixing bowl of races and ethnicities. They think of a culture that is founded on constitutional rights and god given freedoms that everyone should have.
Is the United States of America true to it founding principles? In my opinion I think are principles are freedom, life, liberty and the purist of happiness. These things are a big part in the United States of America and a lot people go by them. I have always thought of these words when I thought what is the United States of America was really about. One of the main things that is American is the right to vote. In a lot of countries, the leaders are all selected by one particular group, or council, or are given that position because they are the next heir in a long line of family members. Being able to choose the officials that govern us is a really big deal. Unfortunately, being American also means that you have the right to vote, or not to vote. More and more, less and less people are voting, especially those of a younger age.
The American Dream: Fact or Fiction? In 1931, historian James T. Adams wrote a book called The Epic of America, which is also referred to as “The American Dream.” Adams describes how America is a land of dreams in which everyone has an opportunity to achieve what he or she desires according to ability and determination. The question is whether today’s meaning of “The American Dream” truly does give one the life of prosperity that immigrants travel here for, and that citizens expect. Today’s interpretation of “living the dream” is that hardworking citizens are able to take care of and improve their lives. This interpretation of “living the dream,” has begun to fade away, making “The American Dream” unattainable for many.
The United States does not have a major socialist party to represent the working people. Yet America remains as the place that people from third world countries aspire to go to. As a British author once said, “there is no country more fabulous than America. She sits bestride the world like a colossus; no other power at any time in the world’s history has possessed so varied, so great an influence on other nations.” (35) Perhaps the fundamental reason as to why so many people strive to migrate to the United States is the individual freedoms given to the people. No other nation in the world strives to
Alina Mehdi Period 4 9/4/13 What is an American? Many people refer to themselves and others as “Americans,” but have you ever thought about what an American is? According to Webster’s Dictionary, an American is a native or inhabitant of America. Some people look at the word American literally and others choose to look at it differently. To me, anyone (race and religion don’t matter) can be an American as long as they believe in freedom and equal rights, love the United States, and consider it their home and where they belong.

Without the enlightenment period, the central ideas and values in general helped to shape the country from the formative years (Ellis, 1976). During and after the American Revolution, most of the core ideas became vital in the progress of American governance. For instance, the constitution and the declaration of independence. Concepts such as the natural rights, freedom from oppression, and revitalized ways of thinking about the government and its structure came from the enlightenment period.

Those landing on her shores come seeking a life where they can achieve any dream they strive for and the freedom do as they please without fearing recourse from an oppressive government. According to our Constitution, our government receives its limited powers from the people and is held accountable to those same people every election cycle. These same people expect their government to make and pass laws that reflect the good of the country as a whole and respect the individual liberties that each citizen enjoys. Closer examination shows that our Constitutional
What It Means to Me to Be an American I have always thought the term “American” was refreshing. I do so because I loved the fact that one word can describe so much and have so many meanings. People often throw the word around without really thinking of what it truly means to be an American. It’s not as simple as most people believe it to be. To me the word “American” has always been connected to the words freedom and responsibility.
