Monique Pimienta English 111 11 April 2011 Nuestro Pueblo The Watts Towers have been a prominent symbol of Los Angeles culture since there construction in 1954. At first glace the towers are impressive mosaic structures made of steel and covered in mortar. Within the mortar are several thousands pieces of recycled glass and tile. Each piece seems to tell a story of dedication, hard work, and desire. A story told by the architect and builder Simon Rodia. Simon Rodia or Sam as he is also known was “a small man who dresses in ragged overalls, a shirt with sleeves cut off, and a greasy hat”. ( ) Rodia was an Italian immigrant who migrated to America with little means and a profound work ethic. In the early 1900’s Rodia moved throughout the States stopping in Pennsylvania, Settle, Texas and various cities in California finally settling in Long Beach California in 1917. There are varied historical accounts of is early years and according to census records Rodia married in the early 1900 and had a son two sons Frank and Fur. In 1910 he had divorced and was raising his children working as a watchman.. The years that followed marked an inconsistent past filled with two failed marriages, domestic abuse and alcoholism . Little is known about this time is his life by Rodia’s own account he “was a bad man in the United States …. druken, all the time a drinkin.” ( I build) What is known is Rodia had a talent for construction and love of design which we would later use to create what some recognize as an “artistic and engineering masterpiece” ( I build). In 1921 Rodia purchased a triangular lot on 1761-1765 East 107th Street. Watts at this time was a blue collar community overflowing with “ruralesque cottages, home built shanties, and industrial sites” ( Victorian).
