Large industries were placed in the Western suburbs and the extremely wealthy lived in massive mansions near the Yarra River. Almost all suburbs had access to a network of train and trams which were said to be the most modern in the world. Because of the economic boom of the gold rush, much of the inner part of Melbourne had outstanding Victorian architecture and housing. Melbourne was well known for its vast collection of building; ranging from cosy cottages to 12-story buildings. With the distinct Victorian architecture in mind, architects designed extraordinary buildings such as the State Library, University of Melbourne and the Royal Exhibition Building.
Gregory Jackson 10/10/2014 Professor Cox HUM-201-10-F14 American monuments that reflect the influence of Roman sculpture and/or architecture Growing up in the Washington D.C Metropolitan area I have seen many different sculptures, buildings, and murals. In addition, the building that reflects the influence of a Roman sculpture the most would have to be the Washington monument, but as a child we called it the upside-down pencil. The Washington Monument is a tall, four-sided, narrow tapering monument which ends in a pyramid shape at the top. The monument was built to commend the first documented President of the United States George Washington. According to nationalparkservice.gov, “The Washington Monument towers above the city that bears his name, serving as an awe-inspiring reminder of George Washington's greatness”.
The grid informed all positioning of the numerous pyramids, temples, plazas, and ritual walkways that surrounded the central core of the city. The impressive size of these buildings stand as demonstrations of power, greatness, and order. Ritualistic buildings and objects found in these pyramids and temples revered the importance of the divine and supernatural world through various scenes and depictions of rituals and the royals who carried them out, ultimately displaying their significance on Teotihuacan’s culture. When the Aztecs, a Mesoamerican culture that arose in the 14th century, came across the ruins of Teotihuacan, they were so profoundly impressed that they believed only the gods could have created a city so astounding. The Aztec utilized not only the advanced architectural strategies of Teotihuacan for their own uses, but they also adopted the styles shown in the creative productions of Teotihuacan such as ceramics, sculptures, and murals.
Engraved into the stone around the main entrance is the quotation “We have lived long but this is noblest work of our whole lives…..The United States take rank this day among the first powers of the earth, said by Robert Livingston on signing of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The vault is built with cream-colored stone and bricks that are uniform throughout the entire building. The area that contains the vault is the tallest part of the entire structure. This allows the vault to be a lot taller than the rest of the ceilings in the structure. The vaulted area uses large arched doorways on both sides to allow for a lot of sunlight to enter the vault. This sunlight reaches up to the ceilings and lights up the cream brick at the peak of the vault.
The fresco's usually have images of important people or sexual content. The roads are still intact and prints from wagons can be still seen. “In Pompeii all is original: the tombs along the stone paved streets; the houses, with their frescoes - some with simple designs and gaudy colors, others more elegant and complex - which open onto shadowed arcades made precious by gardens in bloom and gushing fountains” (Salvatore, 2011, para.18). Pompeii is visited by 2.5 million people annually, making it one of Italy's most popular attractions. People from all across the world come to see this beautiful architectural site for many reasons.
The nightclubs, casinos, and championship boxing matches are world famous, and entertainment enterprises have led to an increasing array of music, sports, gambling, and amusement centers up and down the main «strip,» as the city succeeded in the 1990s in redefining itself as a family resort, complete with monorail (opened 2004). Their most famous example was the jewel Samarkand. When Timuri-Lang had made Samarkand the capital, he brought artisans, engineers, and scholars from all over the conquered lands in Asia. He made Samarkand the most beautiful place. There were mosques, temples, and all different types of architecture. It could have been obviously seen by any outsider that Samarkand was a very diverse and beautiful place to live in.
The Classical City of Olympia The classical Greek city has a variety of certain styles that have proven to be typical for the time period which the cities had been erect and populous. The chief building material used in ancient cities was stone, with the exception of the timber and roof ceiling. Buildings were decorated with terra-cotta and everything was marble cut in large blocks which were fastened together with clamps and dowels. How the ancient Greeks used lighting is also a distinguishing characteristic of their ancient cities. They also knew how the light interacted with the architecture to create seemingly massive and overpowering spaces that defined their building shapes and colors.
