Student: Loginova Tatyana Group: IYA12-01B (A) The description of the Ennis House The Ennis House is one of the most famous buildings in Los Angeles. It was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Mabel and Charles Ennis in 1923. The house is situated on a hill and this fact adds greatness to its view. The building consists of several concrete blogs. Its design is based on ancient Mayan temples. The house seems very spacious and it is really so. The total area is about 10,000 square feet. The windows and doors of the building are made of glass which is darker at top and lighter at bottom. There is another interesting feature. The dining room, kitchen, guestroom, living room and bedroom are situated on the upper terrace. And other rooms are at the lower part of the building. The large fireplace in the dining room makes enchanting atmosphere, and beautiful mosaic on the walls does so as well. In 1940 the house was sold to media personality John Nesbitt. He had it changed by Wright, adding a swimming pool on the north terrace and a heating system. A lot of damage to the Ennis House occurred due to the Northbridge earthquake in 1994 and heavy rains in 2004-2005. It was estimated that the restoration would cost about $15,000,000. The unusual design of the building made it an attractive place for Hollywood filmmakers. “House on Haunted Hill”, “Blade Runner” and many other films contained scenes in this house. The Ennis House is considered to be one of the California’s most historic landmarks. It was included as one of the top ten houses of all time in Los Angeles Times, in a survey “The Best Houses of All Time in L.A.” in
