In Christianity it is believed that Jesus Christ was the savior to all humanity and was sent to Earth by his father (God) to pay for the sins of all mankind. In Judaism on the other hand, Jesus was merely a prophet. Both Christianity and Judaism were established in Israel. Christianity was founded around 30 AD in contrast to Judaism which started around 1000 BC. Although a few sacred readings and the form that followers pray are similar in both religions they are also slightly different.
In general, there are similar ethical beliefs amongst Christians due to Judaism being the only root of Christian ethics. In general Christian ethics is deontological and authoritarian and what is deemed right or wrong is based on belief in God. The ethics of Christianity is based on the holy bible, which is a library of books that expresses Christian faith. As the bible was written over a long period of time and includes many different teachings and morals, there is no overall biblical morality that can be chosen therefore different denominations choose different parts of the bible to support their beliefs. For instance in Genesis it says that ‘God breathed the breath of man into Adam’s nostrils’ and from this Roman Catholics can argue that as God has given life, only he can take it away so things such as abortion, euthanasia and murder are absolute wrongs.
Some of the persecuted who managed to survive found their faith in God strengthened and believed that their survival was solely due to his actions, whereas others felt almost guilty for their survival and claimed that their faith had been destroyed along with the lives of their families and friends. The Holocaust has been used to claim that God’s existence is an impossibility or that even if God does exist, Jews should abandon the concept of such a being. This view has radically changed Jewish theology and has presented a number of challenges to those who still have
1.02 Monotheistic Religions In what ways is the Holy Land an important site for all three monotheistic faiths? The Holy land is important to members of the Jewish, Christian, and Islamic religion because they have lived on the Holy land for generations and have important religious sites located here. The land is holy for Christians because this was where God’s son Jesus was born, crucified and where he resurrected from the dead. For Jews, it contains many Jewish synagogues and this land was promised to them by Yahweh. After a number of Jews were enslaved in Egypt and once freed, Moses helped them escape through the dessert and after over 40 years of traveling in the dessert they finally made it to the promise land by Yahweh which was Canaan.
INTRODUCTION Matthew is the first book of the four Gospels. The term “Kingdom of Heaven” is used commonly and the gospel is often called the Gospel of the Kingdom. Matthew emphasizes that Jesus is the Messiah. Matthew seemed to have Jewish readers in mind. According to Carson “What Matthew aims to write is a Gospel telling us about Jesus, not a church circular addressing an independently known problem.
Judaism & Western Civilization Judaism has had a profound influence on Western civilization. Much of this influence comes from Jewish ideas and values that were transmitted to Christianity, which developed from Jewish roots. Jesus of Nazareth, his disciples, and the first leaders of the Christian Church were all Jewish. The Jewish Bible was incorporated into the Christian Bible as the Old Testament. Not surprisingly, many principles and teachings that are important in Judaism are also important in Christianity.
Prophets were in a sense, men of God as they were believed to be inspired of God. Prophets saw visions to obtain revelations. These members of the Jewish nation have been willing to speak out against inequality, corruption, and evil within their society. The most notable were the prophets of the Hebrew Bible, men like Samuel, Nathan, Amos, and Jeremiah, Elijah and Elisha. The prophet seems to stand apart from the rest of society, but many were mentioned as being a part of a school or guild.
Therefore we don’t for sure know when it was written however it doesn’t take away from the important themes and messages in the book of Jonah On one hand some scholars believe that the Book of Jonah was written purely to demonstrate that g-d cares about everyone, expressed in the first and seconds chapters of the book. We also know that the story was written to convey a message emphasising the importance of repentance. At the time the Jewish people were being wicked and many people were rejecting G-D. Therefore it was important for the story to be written to teach the Jewish people a lesson and to understand the importance of repentance. Other opinions believe that the book was written to describe G-D’s miracles.
They were a group that were associated with aristocracy, sympathetic to Hellenism, and were in competition with the Pharisees (Segel, 2009). The Pharisees were a sect of Judaism that had purity and dietary laws, this did not make it easy to interact with other Jews who were not of the same rituals. However, they were influential, they were able to impose their interpretations on to others even if the others did not actually accept them. Some will say they were the most accurate in their interpretations. They believed in the bodily resurrection of the dead, they were able to justify their adaptation of Babylonian and Persian cultures into their own traditions.
They eliminate James the son of Zebedee because he died in 44 A.D. so if the book of James was written in 45 A.D. it would be impossible for this James to have written the book. James the less and James of Luke did not hold authoritative positions and since the book of James was written in an authoritative tone we can eliminate these two as well. According to Matthew 13:55 Jesus did in fact have a brother named James, and two other brothers as well (Judas and Joseph). Even though James was the brother of Jesus he did not believe that Jesus was really the son of God until his resurrection. In 1Corinthians 15:7 it is said that the resurrected Jesus appeared personally with James, this is probably why James had the sudden change of heart.
