These workers, teachers, and even woodcutters each contribute their own share of work into the running of the country. From the Mother that ensures her children are fed, and happy, to the boatman who keeps the lives of his passengers in check, and safe. Walt Whitman notes “Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else” implying that all of these blue collar people, share the common fact that they are hardworking members of society

After reading the entire essay, it is clear that the general topic of “On Being a Cripple” is to be content and proud of what you do or do not have. By not calling herself ‘disabled,’ she shows great respect for the fact that she is able to do many things. She does not always let her Multiple Sclerosis (MS) keep her from being herself on a daily basis. It talks about everyone working and being happy while they are working. He stated many times in the poem that the people were singing at work. This gives you an understanding about how he felt about the poem he wrote.
Discovering Identity: Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself” In the WNYC podcast “Song of Myself”, Walt Whitman considered Leaves of Grass a subject about “Americans of all nations at any time upon the earth”. This statement still remains true to this day as Whitman is considered the greatest American poet of the nineteenth century and Leaves of Grass is by far his greatest work described as bold, rash, and controversial by many modern day critics. The high praise that Whitman receives today might surprise people that Leaves of Grass initially received many negative reviews when it was self-published by Whitman in 1855. Leaves of Grass was like nothing that came before it and proved that Whitman was a visionary pioneer in expressing what identity is in a conflicted and changing world. Whitman is described as a “great walker” of the streets of New York and would embrace everything around him and take great pleasure in interacting with strangers in the street.
All poets go to great lengths to achieve the results they desire when writing a poem. A majority of poems are works of literature that are dedicated to someone or something in some way or another. Some might not physically express that a poem is dedicated to someone, but the characters or the plot in the poem could symbolize a person that only the receiver of the dedication would realize. Both Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell dedicated poems to each other. Both poems use animals to represent symbols, or could possibly represent each other; however, no one knows the answer for sure except the poets themselves: Bishop and Lowell.
Their aches and pains temporarily eased by the comfort they received by being with people their own age with similar aches and pains. And a similar background. They have all known and lived by each other all of their lives. I remember they would seem to be the happiest on Sundays. Mr. Perkins singing the blues evoked my memories of those times.
Different cultures have all engaged and written great poetry using the idea of repetition, but each culture uses it to show a different meaning or purpose in the speech. Among the most interesting cultures that vary in their usage of repetition are the Native Americans, the Spanish, and the Japanese. In poems from these cultures we see the use of repetition reflect each of their unique histories, values, or perception of the world. In the Native American poems, anaphora is used in a specific way that is rooted in their history; before writing had developed, oral tradition was the primary method to pass on the tribe’s history, beliefs, and lessons. In these oral traditions the tribe leaders or story tellers would repeat lines of stories in order to make important concepts stand out; the repetition also gave the stories a song like quality that made the lesson easy to remember.
