Veterinarians diagnose and treat diseases and dysfunctions of animals. Specifically, they care for the health of pets, livestock, and animals in zoos, racetracks, and laboratories. Some veterinarians use their skills to protect humans against diseases carried by animals and conduct clinical research on human and animal health problems. Others work in basic research, broadening our knowledge of animals and medical science, and in applied research, developing new ways to use knowledge. Most veterinarians diagnose animal health problems, vaccinate against diseases,
broadening our knowledge of animals and medical science (Bureau of Labor Services, 2007). Working in the private practice of Veterinarian work is the most common, for they must be a general physician/ surgeon/ diagnosticain/ pharmacist all in one, with knowledge of a variety of different species (Talk to the Vets, 2005). In order to achieve to be a veterinarian, one must graduate with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree from a four-year program at an accredited college of Veterinary Medicine, with which only twenty-eight meet the accreditation standards (Bureau of Labor Services, 2007). After graduation, one must pass the national board examination, and state exams to achieve their vet liscence, for which this is required ("Veterinarian", 2008). According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, employment is huge for which three out of four vets are either employed in a solo or group practice.
Large Animal Practice which includes Cattle, Equine or Horse Veterinarians and most farm animals. iii. Veterinarians also work for the US government to help develop new medicines and to solve outbreaks in the nations meat supplies. iv. There are also many branches of pharmaceuticals that a veterinarian can help to develop while working with
When I walk into a store, I look for quality and quantity. Petsmart is a very big store, so you do not have to worry about them not having the item you want. For instance, I had been calling around all day to find a Kong harness that the padding on the bottom to prevent in from rubbing the dogs’ chests raw. Everyone I talked to that day said they do not carry them because they are expensive. I called Petsmart and they had them in 5 different colors and 4 different sizes.
It's a different story with cats and dogs, who have been domesticated by selective breeding for desired traits for over thousands of years. These special animal companions depend on humans for food, shelter, veterinary care, and affection. Wild animals, by nature, are self-sufficient and fare best without our interference. The instinctive behavior of these animals makes them unsuitable as pets. >>I will now inform you of the dangers of owning a wild animal.
Not just of the breeding dogs in the farm but most of their puppies as well. As cute as the puppy in the pet shop may seem you should always buy from a proper breeder or an animal shelter this way you will know that you are not contributing towards puppy mills and killing innocent dogs. This is one dog that was lucky enough to be saved from a puppy mill. If the dogs are not rescued and given another home from the animal shelter they will be put down and the owner of the puppy mills get away with murder. Not just of the breeding dogs in the farm but most of their puppies as well.
Two of those choices would be in zoological medicine and a veterinarian in an animal emergency hospital, but the one job I wouldn't want to do is shelter medicine. Zoo veterinarians play a vital role in: monitoring the health of captive animals, in disease research, and in the breeding of endangered species. They use artificial insemination, embryo transfer, in vitro fertilization, and simpler techniques, like hatching eggs of endangered birds in the lab to promote reproduction. They also administer medication and provide holistic and western style treatment to sick and injured animals, visit animal enclosures in zoos and discuss health concerns with the animal keepers; they give the animals checkups, in which they examine the animals' ears, teeth, coat and organs such as
Origins of domestication As we went through the last lectures, the one on the origins of animal domestication seemed very important to me, as I already studied it in Archaeology. Domestication is defined as the slow process which consists in animal or plant adaptation into cultivated forms through altering the behavior, size and genetics by humans. “The shift from acquiring dead animals to maintaining flocks of live animals marks the beginning of animal domestication” stated Meadow (1989:81). But, for any animals to be domesticated they have to develop a relationship with people and they must be willing to live and breed in captivity or in people’s company. Otherwise, this process can not be possible.
If a doctor wants to use animals for research they have to prove that the harm of the animal equals the benefit it will give the human, also, through legislation all lab animals must be protected form cruelty of mistreatment. In addition, millions of animals are killed each year for food, does this benefit humans to the extent that animal research for life saving cures does? Surely medical research on animals is a more worthy cause of death. This is another reason why people are pro- animal testing. God made man in charge of animals and to rule over them, “rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every other living creature that moves on the ground” Many Christians do not have an issue with eating animals, as they believe that god made animals for humans to eat.
Zookeepers give the animals their food, while vets will provide the animals preventive medicine, quarantine and many more. Furthermore, many zoos share the mission of educating the public, protecting endangered species and breeding them. However, there are some zoos that might be purely profit-driven. The zookeepers treat the animals very cruelly, by hitting the animals if they misbehave, by keeping them in small cages and forcing them to perform in front of the audience. Animals in zoos feel that no habitat can beat their natural habitat.
