What is now considered a global powerhouse in the hygiene and health industries, Unilever started humbly back in 1885 with William Hesketh Lever and his brother James, founders of Lever Brothers. The Lever brothers along with a chemist named William Hough Watson developed Sunlight laundry soap which at the time was considered a revolutionary new product that assisted in promoting cleanliness and hygiene in Victorian England. William Hesketh Lever’s mission was, “to make cleanliness commonplace; to lessen work for women; to foster health and contribute to personal attractiveness, that life may be more enjoyable and rewarding for the people who use our products.” Over the years numerous companies joined together to create what Unilever is today; a global business with over four hundred brands focused on health and well-being. Examples of some of Unilever’s diverse brands are Dove, VO5, Vaseline, Axe, Ben & Jerry’s, Knorr, Ponds, and Hellman’s just to name a few. Unilever estimates that over two billion people throughout the world use their products on any given day. Unilever’s mission is to support sustainability and provide customers around the world with products they need to look good, feel good and get more out of life. Although the mission of Unilever is phrased a bit differently today, it isn’t too far from the original goal of the Lever Brothers and their brand of Sunlight soap which encouraged cleanliness, good health and attractiveness. Unilever believes they have a responsibility to consumers
