The Great Recession officially ended four years ago. Stocks have recovered but, the job market hasn't. We have lost nearly 8.8 million jobs between January 2008 and February 2010. As a result, our unemployment rate is at 7.2 percent that is a total of 11.3 million people out of which 4.1 million are long-term. It is to be expected that there will be some difficulties finding work. However, many individuals receiving benefits abuse the system. Benefits continue to be paid to people who fail to comply with their state job search requirements. There should be a statute of limitations on assistance otherwise people will continue to take advantage of their benefits. The unemployment extension legislation allows for 73 weeks of maximum benefits. It is wasteful to allow individuals to collect long-term unemployment. Solutions need to be put in place. The government should mandate individuals who exceed 24 weeks to perform community service, Thereby creating accountability and helping local communities.…show more content…
Volunteering strengths resumes by preventing unemployment gaps, and individuals to maintain and develop new skills. In addition, it enables them to expand their network of contacts, which in turn could help them shorten their job search hunt. Lastly, employers are receptive to unemployed candidate with community service history; it displays their desire to work and sense of responsibility. Unemployment insurance programs are operated by the state through federal guidelines. The state is in charge of setting the financing methods, coverage limits, and eligibility requirements. When states exhaust their unemployment trust funds they have the option to raise taxes, cut programs, or seek federal loans. These options could be avoided by implementing this program.
